Indiana Abortions Drop From 800 a Month to 12 as Abortion Ban Saves Babies

New figures from Indiana show that abortions have dropped almost 100% in the Midwestern state as the new abortion ban that took effect this year is helping women and protecting babies from abortion.

These numbers were originally reported by LifeNews last month, but Indiana Right to Life took time to investigate further to confirm them.

“Indiana’s new abortion law finally went into effect on August 21 following a year of legal wrangling in the courts. The number of reported abortions in Indiana tell the story,” says IRTL president Mike Fichter.

January through December 2022: 794 abortions per month (average)

January through July 2023: 644 abortions per month (average)

August 2023: 355 abortions

September 2023: 13 abortions

October 2023: 12 abortions

Fichter thanked the pro-life advocates in Indiana who helped make it the first state after Roe to pass a pro-life law protecting babies from abortions.

“It is with deep gratitude for all you have done that I am sharing this with you today. I pray you are encouraged and that you will take a few moments today to thank God for the progress being made,” he said in an email to LifeNews.

“Thank your local legislators who supported this new law as well – last year’s special session was not an easy road, but the Indiana legislature had the courage to be the first to take action after the Supreme Court moved the issue back to the states,” Fichter continued.

“With more legal challenges working their way through the courts, you and I know this journey to protect life is far from over. Our hearts still ache for the 12 lives lost to abortion in October – every one of these children matter,” Fichter said. “It is good for us to pause, to give thanks, and to recommit ourselves to being a model state when it comes to compassion for pregnant mothers and protection for unborn babies.”

According to the Guttmacher Institute, the preeminent pro-abortion think tank, “Guttmacher Data Show Virtually No Abortions in Indiana Following New Ban and Continued Impact of Recent Restrictions in North Carolina.”

Guttmacher “released the latest round of data from its Monthly Abortion Provision Study, covering the period from January through August 2023. The latest estimates include initial insights into the effects of a total abortion ban in Indiana, where abortions dropped to essentially zero, as well as the continued impact of severe restrictions recently implemented in North Carolina.”

The Monthly Abortion Provision Study “continues to do what it is designed to do—giving us near-real time insights into how the rapidly shifting state policy landscape is impacting abortion access,” says Isaac Maddow-Zimet, data scientist at Guttmacher and project lead for this research effort. “Among other findings, this month’s data show the initial impact of the total ban in Indiana, and in future months we hope to better understand its ripple effects in neighboring states.”
