Leaders of a New Mexico county issued a strong response Thursday to their state’s pro-abortion politics by passing a resolution declaring their home a “sanctuary for life.”

The Pinon Post reports the Otero County Commissioners unanimously passed the pro-life resolution in a 3-0 vote.

“The [county] hereby recognizes and declares the full humanity of the preborn child through all [stages] of life up and until a natural death,” the resolution states. It also “declares Otero County, New Mexico, to be a sanctuary for life where the dignity of every human being will be defended and promoted from life inside the womb through all stages of development in life up and until a natural death.”

Prior to the vote, several individuals shared their opinions about the resolution, including a woman who said she deeply regrets aborting her unborn baby.

Here’s more from the report:

One woman spoke of how she killed her child in an abortion before she saw the horrors of the procedure. She said she only knew what was truly happening when she worked at an abortion facility and one of her friend’s babies was aborted. She saw the foot and ankle of the dead baby and realized the humanity of the babies in the womb.

The resolution comes at an important time as state leaders work to expand abortions and abortion facilities announce plans to move there from pro-life states like Texas that now ban abortions.

In June, a few days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order to protect abortionists by refusing to cooperate with pro-life states’ investigations, according to the AP.

“Residents seeking access will be protected, providers will be protected, and abortion is and will continue to be legal, safe and accessible, period,” Grisham said.

New Mexico allows unborn babies to be aborted up to birth. It is home to one of the few abortion facilities in the country that advertises abortions in the third trimester.

Meanwhile, pro-life advocates continue to work hard to protect unborn babies in the state.

Mark Lee Dickson, director of Right to Life of East Texas and founder of the Sanctuary City for the Unborn movement, told LifeNews that efforts already are underway in southeastern New Mexico to stop new abortion facilities from opening there. State Sen. David Gallegos, of Eunice, is involved in the effort.

“I have been in the state leg for 10 years and I have always fought for life. Now Whole Woman’s Health, [an abortion chain] out of Texas, is targeting southeast New Mexico, bringing the fight to my hometown,” Gallegos said. “We will be doing everything we can to fight the abortion industry in southeast New Mexico and we will not lose this fight!”
