A pro-life congressman has introduced new legislation that would replace the term “fetus” with “unborn child” through the entirety of federal law in order to emphasize the humanity of unborn babies.

Congressman Doug Lamborn, a Colorado Republican, introduced H.R. 6099, the Recognizing the Unborn Act, with 19 of his colleagues. The Recognizing the Unborn Act will work to ensure that unborn children are acknowledged and protected, he said in a statement to LifeNews.com.

“Everywhere in the federal code where it says ‘fetus,’ we’re going to change that to ‘unborn baby’ to give humanity and dignity and respect to the unborn,” Lamborn said recently.

His bill defines an “unborn child” as “a member of the species homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb.”

“Every single human, born or unborn, is endowed by their creator and deserves the right to life. This is why I introduced the “Recognizing the Unborn Act,” which acknowledges the inherent fact that an unborn child is a human life. Far too often, those on the left try to dehumanize and degrade the life of unborn children. My legislation continues to fight to recognize and protect the most vulnerable in our society,” Lamborn explained.

The pro-life measure already has the support of two pro-life organizations, that issued statement backing it.

Connor Semelsberger, Director of Federal Affairs for Life and Human Dignity, Family Research Council, said “Human life begins at conception, and our federal laws should reflect the humanity of unborn children. Family Research Council thanks Representative Lamborn for introducing legislation to make clear in the federal code that a child in the womb is a distinct, developing, whole human being.”

And the Family Policy Alliance added: “HR 6099 advances the truth: every child, both born and unborn, is fully human and deserves full recognition under law. We thank Rep. Lamborn for putting forth this important legislation and anticipate the day when every child in America is both fully recognized and fully protected.”

This legislation is endorsed by: Family Policy Alliance, Concerned Women for America, Alliance Defending Freedom, Family Research Council, Americans United for Life, and Susan B. Anthony List, according to Lamborn’s office.

Congressman Lamborn introduced the legislation with the support of his colleagues: Rep. Good, Rep. Miller (IL), Rep. Rosendale, Rep. Lesko, Rep. Norman, Rep. Boebert, Rep. Banks, Rep. Kelly (MS), Rep. Bergman, Rep. McKinley, Rep. Hice, Rep. Budd, Rep. Luetkemeyer, Rep. Babin, Rep. Crawford, Rep. Mooney, Rep. Grothman, Rep. Jackson, and Rep. Ellzey.
