Kenyan authorities are trying to combat infanticide after discovering the bodies of more than a dozen infants in the Nairobi River within the past year.

Another infant’s body was discovered Monday evening during a river clean-up in the Korogocho area, bringing the total to 14, Standard Media reports.

Authorities said a total of 19 bodies, including five adults, have been found in the river so far after Gov. Mike Sonko began a program last year to clean up the polluted river, the report states.

“These numbers of dead bodies retrieved from rivers are worrying. We have called on the police to investigate these cases. Who are the people behind these senseless killings,” Sonko said.

One local charity leader suspects some of the babies may have been killed in illegal abortions.

According to the report:

The chairman of Komb-Green Solutions which is assisting in the cleanup Fredrick Okinda, blamed illegal clinics performing abortions for some of the bodies found. He said some appeared to be foetuses.

Abortion is illegal in Kenya unless the life of the woman is in danger.

“Some of the babies appeared to have been thrown after being born”, said Okinda.

His organisation had buried some of the babies next to the river.

Abortion and infanticide are problems across the world. Millions of babies, both born and unborn, are killed every year, sometimes legally.

In America, states protect babies from infanticide through safe haven laws, which allow mothers to safely surrender their child at a police station or hospital without repercussions. Some European and Asian countries also have baby boxes where women can place their infant if they cannot take care of the baby.
