Liberal Newspaper Claims the Bible is Silent on Abortion. But It’s Wrong

Some claim that because the word “abortion” or some literal statement condemning abortion isn’t in black and white in the Bible, the Bible is silent on the topic and thus abortion must be moral and acceptable.

A recent article in The Chicago Tribune argued that the Bible is silent on the issue of abortion.

“Each party to the abortion dispute rests its case on a hallowed document. For the anti-abortion side, it’s the Bible. For the pro-choice side, it’s the U.S. Constitution,” the Chicago Tribune continued.

“But those who are pro-choice say they can’t find the word ‘abortion’ in the Bible. Those who are anti-abortion counter that they can’t find the word ‘abortion’ in the Constitution. Both sides are right.”

Another liberal source, the Huffington Post, wrote a similar report at the 39th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade in 2012, arguing, “There are various reasons people oppose abortion, including ethical, moral and scientific but the primary basis seems to come from a religious conviction, presumptively based on biblical principles, that life starts at conception and therefore terminating a pregnancy is murder.”

The report continued: “Do those opposing abortion on religious grounds know that the Bible does not consider a fetus a full human life or the killing of a fetus murder? It is quite ironic and hypocritical how the anti-abortion/pro-life politicians talk about a fetus being considered a full human life, when the Bible itself, based on a literal reading, does not recognize a fetus as a full human life subject to the same rights as a birthed person.”

“Of course the Bible should not be used as the barometer for social policy but many politicians and advocacy groups make it abundantly clear that their policies on abortion stem from the Bible,” the Huffington Post continued. “The irony is that the Bible does not support their position that a fetus is a full human life and that abortion is murder.”

“Not a single verse yet the anti-abortion movement continues to declare, in the name of God, that abortion is murder. It seems that God left out the prohibition of abortion or perhaps does not consider a fetus a full human life,” it concluded.

However, the scrolls of ancient scripture clearly defend the sanctity of life in the eyes of God, in both the Old and the New Testaments.

Thou shalt not murder. – Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17

God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. – Genesis 1:27

And Isaac besought the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and he heard him, and made Rebecca to conceive. But the children struggled in her womb… – Genesis 25:21-22

But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts.  I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God. – Psalms 22:9-10

Truly children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward. – Psalms 127:3

For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb.  I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. – Psalms 139:13-16

You have been my guide since I was first formed . . . from my mother’s womb you are my God. – Psalms 22:10-11.

The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. – Jeremiah 1:4-5

But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace… -Galatians 1:15

“Confronted with that sticky issue, both sides would respond: ‘Maybe the word isn’t there. But the concept certainly is,’ the Chicago Tribune continues.

Indeed the concept certainly is there. Simply because the word “abortion” is not literally mentioned does not mean one cannot extrapolate abortion, kill, and murder to be synonyms. The Bible is clear in stating, “thou shall not murder” or “thou shall not kill” as the Sixth Commandment.

Scriptures do not present this as a friendly suggestion but a commandment. The Bible does not state sometimes you shall not, or in certain circumstances when it is inconvenient for you, a child may be killed, but commanded “thou shall not murder,” leaving little room for misinterpretation.

According to the Huffington Post, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee summarized these sentiments at the 39th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade: “Whether the baby is in the mother’s womb, or whether it’s 8 years old … that life has value, not because I said so, but because God made it to have value.”
