North Dakota Senate OKs Bill That Could Make State Abortion-Free

The Red River Clinic, the sole public abortion provider in North Dakota, reportedly performs an average of 1,200 abortions a year. Yet its fly-in abortionists have no admitting privileges with local hospitals, should a woman suffer complications from her abortion.

On Thursday, the North Dakota Senate voted in favor of SB 2305 which will require all abortionists to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. The bill will be taken up later this session by the House.

The need for this pro-life/pro-woman measure was dismissed out of hand by Tammi Kromenacker, director of the Red River Women’s Clinic. “Honestly, abortion is so safe, we just don’t admit patients to the hospital,” she told the Associated Press, presumably with a straight face.

“Republican Sen. Spencer Berry, a physician from Fargo, introduced the bill requiring abortion providers to have hospital-admitting privileges,” reported the AP’s Amber Hunt. “He said Thursday that his goal wasn’t to undermine Roe v. Wade but rather to ensure that women get the best medical care possible. ‘We owe it to North Dakota women,’ he said.”

Mississippi’s lone abortion clinic, the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, is fighting back furiously against a state law that also requires abortionists to have admitting privileges. The law was originally set to go into effect July 1. Just before, Judge Daniel Jordan temporarily blocked Mississippi from enforcing HB 1390 and subsequently extended the temporary restraining order a second time. Judge Jordan has blocked any civil or criminal penalties while the challenge wends its way through the courts.
