House Republicans nominated Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as their canddiate for Speaker when the full House votes in January on the next Speaker of the House.

With Republicans likely capturing the lower chamber of Congres, the next speaker is expected to be a Republican — which means Mccarthy, who is pro-life, is on track to replace radical abortion activisrt Nancy Pelosi.

The California Republican congressman turned back a last-minute protest challenge from Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, who is also pro-life. McCarthy won easily, 188 to 31, but strongly conservative members supported Biggs and they hope their votes will translate into McCarthy and other party leaders recognizing their desites for the future of the House under GOP leadership.

They also want him to understand that he needs their support to win the Speaker election in January because of the tenuous margin of a handful of votes Republicans will have against Democrats. The 31 votes opposing McCarthy are more than the 10-15 vote advantage Republicans will have over Democrats next session. He will need 218 votes to be installed as Pelosi’s replacemebnt.

Here’s more on the election:

At the GOP meeting on Tuesday, Biggs was nominated by Rep. Chip Roy (Texas), with Reps. Michael Cloud (Texas) and Ralph Norman (S.C.) seconding the nomination, according to a source in the room. Rep. Kelly Armstrong (N.D.) gave a speech in support of McCarthy.

Earlier in the day, Biggs did not make a presentation at a House GOP leadership candidate forum — during which McCarthy got standing ovations.

The Freedom Caucus is pushing for changes to internal conference rules that, on the whole, would chip away at leadership’s power and give more to individual members — a major dynamic at play in Biggs’s challenge to McCarthy. It is possible that granting some of those requests may influence those skeptical of McCarthy between now and Jan. 3.

“By December 16th, you’ll have a pretty good idea whether Mr. McCarthy is for the job,” Biggs said on the Tuesday podcast.

McCarthy has a 100% pro-life voting record and lambasted Pelosi for promoting and voting for abortions up to birth. McCarthy slammed another bill for forcing taxpayers to fund abortions in a record-long speech that delayed a vote on the bill.

“This Socialist Spending Scam abandons the longstanding, bipartisan Hyde Amendment, allowing for taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand and violating the rights of conscience of millions of Americans,” McCarthy said. “That alone is reason enough to defeat the bill.”
