Abortion advocates have reached a new low in their attempts to characterize pro-life Republicans as waging a “war on women.”
On CNN, Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen told Anderson Cooper that Ann Romney, the wife of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, has no room to comment on women’s issues because she “has never actually worked a day in her life.” This ad hominem attack on Ann Romney omits the fact that she is the mother of five boys and has battled both breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.
Ann Romney fired back on Twitter, writing, “I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys. Believe me, it was hard work.”
In the same interview, Rosen even had the audacity to claim Republicans were behind the Democratic “war on women” rhetoric.
Rosen said, “Well, first, can we just get rid of this word, “war on women”? The Obama campaign does not use it, President Obama does not use it—this is something that the Republicans are accusing people of using, but they’re actually the ones spreading it.” This flies in directly in the face of reality.
While it may be true that President Obama has not personally uttered the words “war on women,” his surrogates, allies and organizations from which he has accepted endorsements certainly do. A quick visit to the websites of Obama-supporting pro-abortion groups like EMILY’s List, Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America reveals that each of these groups features the “war on women” terminology, which Republicans supposedly coined.
President Obama recently took time out of his schedule to record a video message for Planned Parenthood, thanking them for their efforts. If Obama was so opposed to the “war on women” terminology why would he record a special message commending the organization that has used it in its publications, press releases and fundraising?
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has used the “war on women” rhetoric in its fundraising. Leading pro-abortion members of Congress like Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz have repeatedly employed the “war on women” rhetoric.

It’s no secret that Ann Romney is her husband’s closest advisor and confidante. It goes without saying that he would consult her on issues of interest to women voters. Ann Romney represents a threat to the Obama campaign because she is incredibly effective on the stump for her husband. She reminds women voters that the issues of interest to them are the issues that affect all Americans, not the narrow prism of issues defined by the Left, which includes abortion-on-demand and contraception. San Francisco Chronicle reporter Joe Garofoli called Ann Romney, “the best part of a Mitt Romney appearance on the stump.”
Perhaps most astonishing about Rosen’s attack on Ann Romney is the implication that raising five sons amounts to “never actually having worked a day in her life.” In the view of abortion advocates, these women have sold out the feminist movement, which elevates occupation over family and does not see the two as compatible. The abortion industry exploits women’s struggles between careers and family, misleading many into believing abortion is the answer.
There’s something seriously wrong about a society that views ending a child’s life as a necessity for women’s equality. A mother should never have to choose between an education or a career and the life of her unborn child. Mothers like Ann Romney stand in contrast to the notions of womanhood presented by the abortion movement. These women embrace their motherhood and choose to work day-in and day-out to raise their children. There is hardly a nobler or more important career than that of a mother. Abortion advocates are constantly touting free choice but they are quite intolerant of mothers like Ann Romney who choose to stay at home and devote their careers to raising their children.
