Pro-Abortion groups are urging U.S. senators to reject President Donald Trump’s nomination of Dr. Heidi Overton as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
The pro-abortion radicals are citing her opposition to abortion and her warnings about the risks of chemical abortion drugs.
The Center for Reproductive Rights released a statement calling on supporters to contact their senators and demand a “no” vote. The group said Overton has called abortion “corrosive” and abortion pills “dangerous to women,” described the overturning of Roe v. Wade as a “huge victory,” labeled the pro-abortion Women’s Health Protection Act “radicalism,” and worked with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on childhood vaccine policy.

“Who decides whether you can get abortion pills? If Trump gets his way, it’s White House advisor Heidi Overton,” the Center for Reproductive Rights stated.
“His pick to run the FDA has called abortion ‘corrosive’ and abortion pills ‘dangerous to women.’ Our senators must stop her.”
Trump announced the nomination on August 19, praising Overton as a “ROCKSTAR” in his administration who has worked closely with Kennedy and others on health priorities.
Overton currently serves as deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. She previously was chief policy officer at the America First Policy Institute and held a fellowship in the first Trump White House.
Board-certified in public health and general preventive medicine, Overton trained as a general surgery resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital and earned a doctorate in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Pro-life organizations welcomed the selection.
Americans United for Life endorsed Overton and its CEO John Mose said, “Dr. Overton is the right candidate. She has the scientific and medical background that will enable her to perform an objective analysis of the dangers chemical abortion poses to women. Americans United for Life supports Dr. Overton as the next Commissioner of the FDA.”
In a 2023 America First Policy Institute brief she co-authored, Overton wrote that abortion is “corrosive to children, women, and society broadly because it devalues and extinguishes innocent human life” and described chemical abortions as “far more dangerous to women.” She has also called the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade “a huge victory for life,” stating that “Human life is not disposable, but a precious gift from God with inherent worth and dignity.”
Supporters argue her medical training and policy experience make her well-suited to examine the lck of safety of mifepristone and strengthen protections for women and unborn children. The nomination requires Senate confirmation when lawmakers return from recess.
