A new report from a leading pro-abortion group confirms that abortion bans are saving more babies as fewer people are travelling out of state for abortions.

A new report released Tuesday by the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion group formerly affiliated with Planned Parenthood, shows the number of women crossing state lines to get an abortion decreased slightly from 2023 – making it clear that abortion bans are becoming more effective.

Overall, there were 1,038,100 abortions nationwide – meaning over 1 million babies were killed in abortions in America in 2023, an increase of less than 1% over 2023. The slight increase is not surprising given the poor economy adversely affecting many Americans last year.

Guttmacher found that roughly 155,000 women crossed state lines to get an abortion in 2024, down about 14,000 from 2023. Illinois, Kansas, North Carolina and New Mexico sell the most abortions to out of state residents.

Florida and South Carolina reported sharp decreases in abortions in the wake of six-week abortion bans that went into effect in 2024.

In a statement to LifeNews, National Right to Life education director Randall K. O’Bannon, Ph.D. said the Guttmacher report figures should be taken with caution, saying they’re estimates that may be inflated.

“This isn’t the old Guttmacher report that surveys every clinic and tracks down every abortionist. Guttmacher is still relying a bit too heavily on abortionists who were some of their most reliable sources before Dobbs and giving too much credit to abortion pill sales by “virtual” and online pill promoters,” he said.

Still, the comparison to the prior year figures helps understand that abortions are not significantly increasing in America.

“That said, that they would report a figure similar to last year’s indicates that we’re not seeing a “growing market,” that abortionists are not doing a lot more abortions, whatever the actual number of abortions really is. Other studies do show that lives are being saved in states with pro-life protections, regardless of what Guttmacher is reporting,” O’Bannon explained.
