Laphonza Butler has been sworn in to replace the late Senator Diane Feinstein. That means the radical abortion activist and Maryland resident is the new senator from California.
California Governor Gavin Newsom selected the most radical abortion activist he could possibly find to replace pro-abortion Senator Diane Feinstein, who passed away last week. Butler, the president of Emily’s List, will fill the late senator’s seat for the remaining 15 months and a bit in her term.
Butler heads the extreme group Emily’s List, a pro-abortion organization that advances abortions up to birth funded at taxpayer expense. It works to elect candidates that also support unlimited abortions and fund their campaigns with tens of millions of dollars from elites across the country.
Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins panned the pick in comments to LifeNews.
“California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is working to turn California into an abortion tourism stop for the nation, made the unimaginative choice of an abortion-without-limits candidate to take the seat of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein,” noted Hawkins. “A truly diverse pick from Newsom would have been someone who will work to protect all Californians, born and preborn.”
“There isn’t a limit on abortion that Gov. Newsom would support. He supports all abortions and your tax money to pay for them. If I’m wrong, prove it. Gov. Newsom, name one abortion you would limit,” said Hawkins.
Butler is already under fire for being a Maryland resident just 30 days ago.

“FEC filings from EMILY’s List record Laphonza Butler’s residence as Silver Springs, Maryland as recently as 31 days ago,” said FEC analyst Rob Pyers. “FPPC and FEC filings indicate that soon-to-be California Senator Laphonza Butler hasn’t been a resident of the state for over two years.”

SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser condemned the appointment in comments to LifeNews.
“The abortion lobby spends millions to elect Democrats who back its agenda of abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy, paid for by taxpayers. Democrats like Newsom, in turn, are beholden to the abortion lobby. The pay-to-play system couldn’t be more obvious, with an unelected Senate seat as the ultimate reward. Newsom even passed over staunch pro-abortion candidates who reside in California, in favor of a Beltway insider and the biggest pro-abortion extremist he could find,” she said.
She added: “The last thing Washington needs is another rubber stamp for the brutal abortion industry. Biden likewise heads the most radical pro-abortion administration in history. Voters need to realize the days of ‘safe, legal and rare’ are gone – today’s Democratic Party stands for abortion any time, for any reason with no limits up to birth. Republicans should stand up for life and embrace at least minimum national protections at 15 weeks, when babies in the womb feel pain, and go on offense to contrast themselves with their opponents’ extremism.”
EMILY’s List appeared to scrub its website of a reference to Butler’s Maryland residence in the hours after her appointment was announced. The group spent $112 million in the 2020 presidential election cycle and $102 million in the 2022 midterms. According to OpenSecrets, in the last federal election cycle, EMILY’s List made 100% of their total contributions in support of Democrats.
Feinstein has died at the age of 90. Feinstein was an ardent abortion supporter who repeatedly voted for abortions up to birth.
Feinstein’s death was confirmed to ABC7 by insider Phil Matier. Born in 1933, Feinstein was a long-term leader within the Democratic party after graduating from Stanford University in 1955. She’d go on to become the first ever female mayor of San Francisco after he predecessor was assassinated in 1978.
Sources also confirmed news of her passing to The Associated Press, but no information on her exact cause of death has been released at this time. She was the oldest sitting U.S. Senator at the time of her death, having been elected to office in 1992. She was one of two of the first women to ever reach the position from California.
In the last years of her career, Feinstein’s age and ailing health were of concern to many, according to the BBC. In May, she allegedly returned to the Senate in a wheelchair, asking people “where am I going?” She voted as recently as Thursday, just hours before her death.

In July, a hot microphone caught Feinstein being told to “just say aye” during a key defense vote. “For me to say I would like to support a yes vote on this. It provides 823 billion. That’s an increase of 26 billion for the Department of Defense. And it funds priorities submitted,” she said right before she was told to say “aye” by an aide. She opted to not seek reelection shortly before her heath started to fail.
Earlier this year,Feinstein introduced a bill that would force every state to legalize the killing of unborn babies for basically any reason up to birth. Nicknamed the Abortion Without Limits Up to Birth Act by pro-life advocates, the bill would “guarantee access to abortion everywhere” in the United States, according to Democrats’ press release.
Feinstein would often repeat a lie about putting women in jail for illegal abortions.
Despite the fact that pro-abortion Senator Dianne Feinstein has never been a judge or an attorney, she claimed during hearings on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh that she sentenced women to jail for having illegal abortions.
Ed Whelan at the National Review said Feinstein is not a lawyer and never was a judge. He said her remark could have referred to a time when she served on the California Parole Board in the 1960s.
The problem is no women were ever prosecuted for obtaining abortions in California prior to Roe v. Wade, and there are only two known prosecutions of women for abortions (in 1911 and 1922) in the whole of the U.S., according to research by Clarke D. Forsythe, senior legal counsel for Americans United for Life.
In 2016, Forsythe wrote:
This political claim is not an abstract question that is left to speculation—there is a long record of states treating women as the second victim of abortion in the law that can be found and read. To state the policy in legal terms, the states prosecuted the principal (the abortionist) and did not prosecute someone who might be considered an accomplice (the woman) in order to more effectively enforce the law against the principal. And that will most certainly be the state policy if the abortion issue is returned to the states.
He noted that California and 19 other states had statutes that technically made it a crime for a woman to participate in her own abortion; however, these were not enforced, and even historians who support Roe v. Wade admit this to be true.
“There is no record of any prosecution of a woman as an accomplice even in these states,” Forsythe wrote.
Feinsein also once trashed Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s Catholic faith.
