Maryland is stockpiling abortion pills to kill unborn babies – and using taxpayers’ money to do it.
WYPR reports Democrat Gov. Wes Moore’s administration just spent $1.2 million to buy thousands of abortion drugs in coordination with the University of Maryland Medical Center. Although the report did not mention the exact number purchased, Moore’s administration estimated the drugs will last about two and a half years.
Likely, it is enough to kill thousands of unborn babies, most of whom already have fingers and toes, beating hearts and brain waves. The abortion drug mifepristone is used to abort unborn babies up to about 10 weeks of pregnancy.
The purpose of the drug is to destroy an unborn baby’s life. But Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman, deputy secretary for public health services for the Maryland Department of Health, described it as “standard” medical care in a comment to WYPR.
“It’s the standard of care for medical abortions,” Kalyanaraman said. “We want to make sure that women in the state of Maryland, and women from other states as well when they come to Maryland, have access to basic health care needs.”
Kalyanaraman said the state government also is considering more long-term “solutions” to keep providing abortion drugs in the future.

Right now, OB-GYNs and emergency room doctors are challenging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone as an abortion drug, saying the agency failed to properly study the risks under Democrat presidential administrations. Studies indicate abortion risks are more common than what abortion activists often claim, with about one in 17 women requiring hospital treatment.
Ignoring safety concerns, Moore and several other Democrat governors are buying abortion drugs to keep killing unborn babies in case the courts block the drug. Washington state, California and Oregon are among the others.
First approved under the Clinton administration, mifepristone is used to abort unborn babies up to about 10 weeks of pregnancy – although some abortionists use it later. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone and basically starving the unborn baby to death.
Typically, abortion groups also prescribe a second drug, misoprostol, to induce labor and expel the baby’s body. If the courts block the first abortion drug, some abortion groups say they will begin selling misoprostol alone.
Currently, mifepristone is used for more than half of all abortions in the U.S. every year, killing hundreds of thousands of unborn babies, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the pro-abortion movement has been pushing abortion drugs even more heavily, and some groups send the drugs to women in pro-life states illegally – putting their and their unborn babies’ lives at risk.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration has been trying to expand the life-destroying drugs even further, first by allowing mifepristone to be sold through the mail without any direct medical supervision, and, more recently, by allowing pharmacies like Walgreens, CVS and RiteAid to sell them. In April alone, LifeNews learned of two crime cases involving attempted forced abortions using abortion pills, one in Texas and another in Florida.
Along with millions of unborn babies’ deaths, the FDA has linked mifepristone to at least 28 women’s deaths and 4,000 serious complications. However, under President Barack Obama, the FDA stopped requiring that non-fatal complications from mifepristone be reported. So the numbers almost certainly are much higher.
A recent study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute found that the rate of abortion-related emergency room visits by women taking the abortion drug increased more than 500 percent between 2002 and 2015.
