Donald Trump Defends Rape and Incest Exceptions: You Need Them to Win Elections

Former President Donald Trump continued his national conversation about abortion today, and defended including rape and incest exceptions in pro-life legislation.

While many pro-life Americans oppose killing babies conceived in rape or incest in abortions, some pro-life people believe the exceptions are a necessary evil to get pro-life bills approved that protect 98% of babies from abortion.

According to his new comments, you can put Donald Trump in the latter group.

Trump said in an interview on Tuesday with political commentator John Solomon on his podcast, “John Solomon Reports,” that he supports exceptions for instances of rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother, the latter of which virtually all pro-life Americans support.

“I’m a person that feels that the exceptions are very important for a lot of reasons,” he said.

“If you don’t have the exceptions, it’s very, very hard — and I think that’s been proven — it’s very, very hard to win an election,” Trump argued.

“Now I don’t say you do it for that, you do it for other reasons, moral reasons,” he continued. “You do it for what you really believe, but it still is a very, very difficult thing to overcome I would say from the standpoint of an election.”

The comments come days after Trump promised he had some sort of federal abortion solution.

Last week, Trump alluded to some sort of deal he believes he could reach on abortion if elected president. Trump offered no specifics on what the deal would be but claimed it would appeal to everyone nationwide.

“We’re in a position now – and I’m going to be leading the charge – we’re in the position now where we can get something that the whole country can agree with, and that’s only because I got us out of the Roe v. Wade where the pro-life people had absolutely nothing to say,” he said.

Asked to offer more specifics, Trump merely indicated he is in a “very powerful negotiating position.”

“But on pro-life, I will tell you what I did on Roe v. Wade, nobody else, for 50 years they’ve been trying to do it. I got it done. And now we’re in a position to make a really great deal, and a deal that people want,” Trump concluded.

Trump didn’t explain what a potential deal could be, but he could be alluding to a 20-week ban or some other national ban on late-term abortions.

Although polls show Americans are pro-life and strongly support banning late-term abortions, Trump would have a lot of heavy lifting to do to get any such bill through Congress because pro-abortion Democrats will certainly filibuster such legislation in the Senate.
