Abortionist Quit and Became a Pro-Life Doctor When a Baby Survived Abortion

Former abortionist Dr. John Bruchalski shamefully admitted how he almost suffocated a newborn who had survived an abortion in a new interview.

Bruchalski, who quit aborting unborn babies and later opened a pro-life Catholic medical practice, shared his testimony recently with Live Action president and founder Lila Rose.

In a short video from the interview, the Virginia OB-GYN described how God began to change his life one day in the hospital.

At the time, Bruchalski said he was living a double life. He had begun going back to church and even started volunteering at a pro-life pregnancy center to help pregnant mothers who wanted their babies. But at his regular job as an OB-GYN at a Virginia hospital, he also was doing abortions.

One day, he said he had two pregnant patients in neighboring rooms. Both were at the same stage of pregnancy, about 22 to 23 weeks, but one mother wanted her baby and the other did not.

Bruchalski told Live Action that he was working to delay labor for the mother who wanted her baby so that her child would develop enough to survive.

In the next room, he performed an abortion to end the life of the “unwanted fetus.” But the baby — a healthy, premature boy — was born alive and crying, according to the interview.

Bruchalski remembered hearing the baby “crying, wheezing, making squeaking noises” and admitted how distorted his thoughts were at the time.

“Do you know what my first instinct was? To suffocate it and put a towel on it so the mom wouldn’t suffer,” he said.

He didn’t. Instead, realizing the baby was bigger than he thought, he placed the infant on the scale: The baby boy weighed 505 grams – “5 grams over what the state of Virginia considers a human life,” Bruchalski said.

Because the state law required it, he said he called the neo-natal intensive care unit to “come in and resuscitate this fetus, this born child that I aborted. No matter what the mom wanted, no matter what I wanted, it was a state law so I did it.”

The NICU doctor who came in to care for the boy was a “wonderful, smart, articulate” woman, Bruchalski continued.

“She looked quickly and realized what I did, and she said, ‘Hey Bruchalski, stop treating my patients like little tumors,’” he said.

Her response was a wake-up call for him, and Bruchalski quit doing abortions. God changed his life, he repented, and he eventually founded Tepeyac OB/GYN in Fairfax, Virginia, an organization dedicated to educating medical professionals about life-affirming care and providing medical care to women in need.

When Rose asked about the baby boy who survived the abortion, Bruchalski said he believes the child lived. At the time, however, he said he did not follow up because it would have reminded him of his mistake.

Rose said Bruchalski’s story is proof that pro-life laws do save lives.

“Laws are powers to save, and that law prevented that child from being killed,” she said. “Ultimately, that law saved that child’s life because it would have been left to die as many children are in these abortions.”

Dozens, perhaps hundreds, of babies survive abortions every year in the United States, but no one knows exactly how many. Most states do not keep track of babies who survive abortions.

LifeNews recently examined abortion data from seven states that do keep track, and, between 2020 and 2022, 34 babies were reported born alive in botched abortions.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, as well as the personal testimonies of nurses and abortion survivors themselves, also provide evidence that babies survive abortions. According to the CDC, at least 143 babies were born alive after botched abortions between 2003 and 2014 in the U.S., though there likely are many more.
