Associated Press “Fact Check” Claims “There’s No Baby There” During an Abortion

A wildly biased “fact check” from the Associated Press quotes two pro-abortion doctors who claim “there is no baby” when pregnant mothers take abortion drugs.

The AP piece examines several claims about the abortion drug mifepristone, which is used to abort unborn babies up to about 10 weeks of pregnancy. Published in 2022, the article resurfaced after a federal judge issued a ruling Friday blocking the FDA’s approval of the drug. The judge agreed with doctors who say the agency approved mifepristone as an abortion drug under political pressure and did not properly study its risks.

But abortion activists insist that the drug is safe for pregnant mothers. They never mention how its purpose is to kill unborn babies in elective abortions.

One statement that the AP deemed false about the drug is that parts of the baby sometimes remain in the mother’s womb afterward.

To check the veracity of the statement, the news outlet relied solely on two pro-abortion doctors: Emily Godfrey, an abortionist and professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and Alison Edelman, a “reproductive health care provider” and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Oregon Health & Science University. The AP did not mention their pro-abortion work.

Edelman told the news outlet that most women take the abortion pill before there is an “actual” baby in their womb.

“Before nine weeks, really what you’re seeing is a gestational sac,” she said. “To have like an actual part of a baby left, would be, would be almost unheard of for a medical abortion process.”

At nine weeks, she said the non-baby is about a centimeter long and, by 11 weeks, it is “probably a centimeter and a half to two centimeters.”

Godfrey agreed with her colleague, saying, “There is no baby there.” She said the abortion pill only affects an “embryo” inside its mother’s womb.

“There is no baby there. The embryo is the size of a piece of rice. There is nothing to be left behind,” she said. “Arms don’t really develop until nine weeks of pregnancy. Again, they are millimeters in length.”

But Godfrey and Edelman neglected to mention that the term embryo is just a stage of human development, much like infanthood and adolescence are. Abortion activists use terms like embryo and fetus to deny the humanity of unborn babies and treat them differently than what they are: unique, living, irreplaceable human beings.

They are wrong about the unborn baby just being a limbless “gestational sac,” too.

At the moment of conception, biologically a unique living human being comes into existence. By six weeks of pregnancy, that human being’s heart already is beating. Pregnancy websites, medical textbooks and lecturesscientific research and highly-respected medical institutions confirm these and other facts about how intricately developed unborn babies are even at the earliest stages of pregnancy.

For example, the Mayo Clinic describes an unborn baby at eight weeks of pregnancy this way: “Eight weeks into your pregnancy, or six weeks after conception, your baby’s lower limb buds take on the shape of paddles. Fingers have begun to form. Small swellings outlining the future shell-shaped parts of your baby’s ears develop and the eyes become obvious. The upper lip and nose have formed.”

The Endowment for Human Development provides even more details: “Rapid brain development continues with the appearance of the cerebral hemispheres at 6½ weeks. The embryo reflexively turns away in response to light touch on the face at 7½ weeks. Fingers are beginning to form on the hand. …

“Brainwaves have been measured and recorded before 8½ weeks. … By 9 weeks the hands move, the neck turns, and hiccups begin. Girls now have ovaries and boys have testes.”

These basic facts contradict the pro-abortion doctors’ claims, but there are not mentioned anywhere in the Associated Press “fact check.”

The pro-abortion doctors’ statements also deny the personal experiences of many abortion patients. With the abortion pill, women pass their aborted babies’ bodies at home and many realize too late that their baby was a tiny but recognizable human child with arms and fingers, a nose and eyes, and once-functioning organs.

Recently, OB-GYNs have reported an alarming rise in women calling them traumatized after taking abortion pills and then delivering their aborted baby’s body in a toilet.

Dr. Donna Harrison of the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs told Aleteia that many panic after passing their aborted baby at home and seeing its “legs, arms, head, toes.”

“It’s not a blob of tissue. And women are not prepared for that,” Harrison said. “These women are being told to flush human tissue down into the septic system? Even from a public health standpoint it’s a terrible idea.”

One website, Aid Access, that sells abortion pills through the mail also warns women that they may see their aborted babies’ bodies and this can be “distressing.”

Pregnant mothers deserve to know the facts about abortion and their unborn babies. But abortion activists hide these details because they often prompt women to choose life for their child.
