Canada Killed Over 87,000 Babies in Abortions in 2021, Death Toll is Probably Even Higher

More than 87,000 unborn babies were aborted in 2021 in Canada, according to newly released statistics from the government health department.

However, True North reports the number likely is much higher, because the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) report is missing data.

According to the new CIHI report, there were 87,485 induced abortions in Canada in 2021. Of those, about one third were done with abortion drugs and the remainder were surgical abortions.

The report includes only a few basic details: the ages of the mothers, the general type of abortion and the province where the abortion took place, along with the abortion numbers themselves. The CIHI data does not include complications, gestational ages, reasons for the abortions or other details.

True North reports the government data does not have all the numbers from Quebec, Saskatchewan, Alberta, New Brunswick and the Territories either — meaning there probably were thousands more unborn babies whose abortion deaths were not counted.

“Unfortunately, CIHI is not able to capture the data for all induced abortions in Canada as not all provinces require the reporting of induced abortions outside of hospitals,” Scott Hayward, co-founder of pro-life organization RightNow, told the news outlet. “Nor does it include data for those abortions induced by the administration of Mifegymiso [the abortion pill] outside the hospital setting.”

Hayward said Canadians need to understand the “pervasiveness of abortion,” but the lack of data hinders their understanding.

Here’s more from the report:

… precise statistics on abortion are still challenging to produce because no federal ministry or board is keeping track of them. Additionally, private clinics such as Planned Parenthood are not legally obligated to report the number of abortions completed to the CIHI.

In 2021, Pro-life researcher Patricia Maloney found that the CIHI underreported 18,278 abortions performed in 2019 in Ontario alone. Through the Freedom of Information Act (FOI), she was able to find these numbers based on Ontario doctors’ billing codes.

Data about abortion complications also is important but the CIHI report does not include it. In February, Campaign Life Coalition uncovered records from Health Canada showing that a 19-year-old woman died of “septic shock” after taking the abortion drug in 2022. It is unknown how many women have died along with their unborn babies from legal abortions in Canada.

Abortions are legal for any reason up to birth in the country, and most are taxpayer-funded through the government-run health care system.

Last spring, when it appeared likely the United States Supreme Court would overturn Roe v. Wade, the Canadian Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould welcomed Americans to come across the border to abort their unborn babies.
