Hawaii Legislature Passes Bill to Make Killing Babies in Abortions a Constitutional Right

It’s lacking only the governor’s signature—Senate Bill 1 which (in the euphemism filled description) “protects access to abortions for women in Hawaii following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling.” The bill has passed third reading in both chambers and now heads to Gov. Josh Green.

“It is imperative that we strengthen the state’s policy to affirm protection of the rights of individuals to obtain reproductive care,” Majority Leader Nadine Nakamura of Kauai said in a House news release Friday. “Today’s vote ensures the protection of our daughters, sisters, and our future generations.”

Senate Bill 1 not only “says that the state will not deny or interfere with a person’s right to an abortion and prohibits releasing information about reproductive health care service,” SB 1”also allows licensed physician assistants to perform certain abortions and shields medical providers in Hawaii from legal action from other states,” according to The Maui News.

At a press conference overflowing with abortion advocates, state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole claimed that Texas passed a law “that encourages out-of-state residents to potentially come here to go after our Hawaii doctors ” who perform abortions. “In Hawaii, Roe remains the law of the land, ” Keoho­kalole boasted, according to Tori DeJournett of The Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke described SB 1 as a “huge step” in protecting for women in Hawaii and from out of state.”I am just so thankful the Senate has taken this step,” Luke said. “We look forward to continuing to work with the administration, the House and the governor to make sure this protection.
