Man Pushed His Pregnant Girlfriend Down the Stairs Because She Refused to Have Abortion

A British court trial this week serves as a reminder of how frequently pregnant mothers feel pressured to abort their unborn babies, often by an abusive partner.

In the trial before the Durham Crown Court, Thomas Gair, 31, of Norton, Teesside, England, is accused of pushing his pregnant girlfriend down the stairs after urging her to have an abortion, the Daily Mail reports.

The woman, Chloe Bradley, was knocked unconscious in the fall and taken to the hospital; she and her baby survived, according to the report.

Bradley testified in a video interview that Gair, a police officer, manipulated and controlled her throughout their three-year relationship and threatened to leave her when she became pregnant.

“When I fell pregnant he told me to have an abortion or he was going to leave me. He said we couldn’t afford it and it would ruin our lives,” she told the court. “He told me I would be a crap mother and I was probably going to lose the baby.”

Bradley continued: “I was really ill when I was pregnant, I was backwards and forwards to the hospital, but he offered me no help or support. He wanted me to have a miscarriage.”

She accused Gair of making fun of her weight, poking her in the stomach and threatening to push her down the stairs, according to the report.

On May 31, 2020, she said Gair followed through with the threat because she refused to abort their baby.

“I was going upstairs to the top floor of our house and he was coming down. He began shouting and screaming in my face and he pushed me back and I fell right down the stairs backwards and hit my head twice,” she said. “I was knocked out and he was panicking when I came round. I was taken to hospital by ambulance and needed a CT scan.”

She recovered and later gave birth to a healthy baby, according to court testimony.

Bradley accused her ex-boyfriend of physically and verbally abusing her in other ways, too, including pushing her out of a car and stalking her after she moved out, the report states.

Gair has denied all the allegations against him, according to the report.

Many women face pressure to abort their unborn babies, sometimes from employers or social workers, and others from partners or parents. Coercion sometimes is coupled with abuse, and both mothers and their babies are abused and sometimes killed because the mother resisted pressure to have an abortion.

A 2014 study, “Associations Between Intimate Partner Violence and Termination of Pregnancy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” published in the journal “PLOS Medicine,” found that intimate partner violence, including history of rape, sexual assault, contraception sabotage and coerced decision-making, was associated with abortion.

Another study by the Elliot Institute found a high rate of coerced and forced abortions among post-abortive women, as high as 64 percent. And a recent BBC survey found 15 percent of women of childbearing age in the UK felt pressured to have abortions that they did not want.
