A transgender abortion doula who supports pregnant mothers as they abort their unborn babies is scheduled to speak at the University of Notre Dame this month, contradicting Catholic teachings about the sanctity of human life.

Ash Williams, “a Black trans abortion doula, public intellectual, and abolitionist community organizer,” is one of the speakers in a new “reproductive justice” series at the Catholic university, according to the Catholic News Agency. The Notre Dame gender studies program and Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values are helping to sponsor the event.

At the March 20 event, “Trans Care + Abortion Care: Intersections and Questions,” Williams will discuss “the intersections between trans care and abortion care” – in other words, promote killing unborn babies in abortions to Catholic university students.

One of Williams’ jobs is serving as an abortion doula, a non-medical position that typically involves providing emotional support and encouragement to pregnant mothers as they abort their unborn babies, perhaps by driving them to the appointment, holding their hand during the abortion or sitting with them afterward.

Williams aborted two unborn babies and has a tattoo of a manual vacuum aspiration device, which is used to kill unborn babies in abortions. Williams now identifies as a transgender man, according to the report.

The upcoming talk and the whole pro-abortion series have many alumni upset. William H. Dempsey, a Notre Dame alumnus and president of the alumni group Sycamore Trust, told CNA it “undermine[s] the Catholic identity of the university.”

“The Church’s position on abortion is that it is the highest order of evil to take the lives of innocent human beings,” Dempsey told CNA. “As the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has said, this is the preeminent issue in American public life today.”

The university series has not even included the pro-life perspective, he continued.

“There have been no panelists who have explained the Catholic Church’s position on abortion and responded to what’s been said by the opponents of Church teaching,” Dempsey said.

The University of Notre Dame is a Catholic school that is supposed to uphold the dignity and value of every human life, born and unborn, in accordance with Christian teaching. However, its leaders repeatedly have faced criticism in recent years for employing pro-abortion faculty and honoring individuals who promote killing unborn babies in abortions.

Last fall, for example, according to the Irish Rover, Professor Tamara Kay was caught offering to help students abort their unborn babies by advertising abortions to students on her office door and on social media.

Around the same time, the Rover reported how the university refused to be a sponsor at the Right to Life Michiana for its 50th annual benefit after more than a decade of supporting the pro-life organization.

A few years earlier, its administrators faced criticism after naming pro-abortion Democrat Pete Buttigieg as a faculty fellow. In 2019, a group of its professors blasted pro-life advocates as racists during a campus event hosted by the Notre Dame Gender Studies Department. And in 2016, the university faced a strong public outcry after it gave one of its most prestigious awards to Joe Biden, despite his pro-abortion record.
