Missouri lawmakers took action this week to ensure that unborn babies continue to be protected from abortions in their state.
WFIN News reports legislation by state Sen. Mike Moon, R-Barry, would amend the Missouri Constitution to prevent activist judges from finding a “right to abortion” in the state and overturning pro-life laws.
On Wednesday, the Senate Health and Welfare Committee held a hearing on the pro-life bill, Senate Joint Resolution 19, which would add language to the state constitution that says, “Nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion.”
Moon expressed confidence that lawmakers and voters will adopt the amendment and confirm that babies in the womb are valuable human beings.
“Let the voters weigh in on this,” he said, according to WFIN. “They will confirm with us that life is precious, and it should not be snuffed out prematurely through abortive actions.”
To amend the constitution, the language must be approved by the state legislature and then voters on the ballot.

This winter, state lawmakers also are considering legislation to expand Medicaid for new mothers and ensure that no state tax dollars are being used directly or indirectly to support abortion.
Missouri is one of 14 states that protects unborn babies by banning abortions; exceptions are allowed for medical emergencies. The law went into effect last year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
For nearly 50 years under Roe, abortions destroyed more than 64 million unborn babies. Only now that Roe has been overturned may states again protect the right to life for all human beings, born and unborn.
In January, however, a group of Missouri abortion activists who identify as Christian and Jewish filed a lawsuit against the state abortion ban, claiming that protecting unborn babies’ right to life violates their “basic human rights” and religious freedom under the state constitution.
Many other pro-life states also are fighting legal battles to defend their laws that protect unborn babies.
