Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker called for a state constitutional amendment Monday that would make killing unborn babies for any reason up to birth a protected right.
Speaking about plans for his second term, the Democrat governor insisted that creating a constitutional right to abortion is necessary to fight back against “extremists” (pro-life advocates who want to protect unborn babies’ lives), WICS News reports.
“The extremists still wanna take a woman’s right to choose and I don’t intend to let them. That’s why yet again on women’s rights Illinois will lead,” Pritzker said.
The pro-abortion governor said he wants the Illinois Constitution to include a right to privacy and bodily autonomy – a change that would make it nearly impossible to pass any restrictions on abortion.
Illinois has some of the most liberal abortion laws in the country. In 2021, the state legislature ignored the public’s wishes and voted to repeal its parental notification law, which required at least one parent to be notified before their underage daughter has an abortion. The state also forces taxpayers to pay for abortions and allows unborn babies to be aborted for basically any reason up to birth.

Responding to the governor’s plans, Illinois Right to Life executive director Mary Kate Zander said women and children already are being harmed by his radical pro-abortion agenda. In 2020, 46,243 unborn babies were killed in abortions, according to statistics from the Illinois health department.
“His pro-abortion legacy is, in practice, harming women and depriving unborn children of an opportunity at life. This may be politically expedient for Governor Pritzker today, but it won’t age well,” Zander said.
The state constitution actually should protect unborn babies’ right to life, Zander continued, quoting language that states, “No person shall be deprived of life without due process of law.”
“Abortion is inherently unconstitutional, as it does exactly this,” she said. “The governor’s refusal to acknowledge this fact is politically driven and has no basis in truth whatsoever.”
State constitutional amendments are a strategy of the pro-abortion movement to keep abortion on demand legal across the United States. Voters in California, Michigan and Vermont passed pro-abortion constitutional amendments in November, and pro-abortion groups are trying to do the same in South Dakota.
Sometimes, the amendments do not specifically mention abortion, and pro-abortion groups deceive voters into thinking the measures simply protect “women’s health care” and “reproductive rights.”
Pro-abortion campaigns receive millions of dollars to lobby for these amendments from some of the richest people in the world, including George Soros, Michael Bloomberg and former Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer.
Notably, an executive at the former cryptocurrency company FTX, which is embroiled in scandal and since has been accused of massive fraud, donated $4 million to the Michigan pro-abortion campaign last year.
Polls consistently show Americans support laws that protect unborn babies from abortion, especially after the first trimester or once their heartbeat is detectable. Most also support common-sense restrictions such as parental consent for minors and bans on taxpayer funding for elective abortions.
