It took 15 votes but the House of Representatives finally voted for a new Speaker — pro-life Congressman Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy became the 55th Speaker early Saturday morning after five of his staunchest GOP critics voted “present.”McCarthy garnered 216 votes on the 15th and final ballot, defeating radical pro-abortion Democrat Hakeem Jeffries of New York 216-212.

Reps. Andy Biggs and Eli Crane of Arizona, Bob Good of Virginia, and Matt Rosendale of Montana voted “present” after opposing McCarthy on 14 previous ballots. Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Matt Gaetz of Florida flipped to “present” on the 14th ballot.

Republican North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry tried to get the chamber to adjourn but Republicans wanted to preserve the deal McCarthy and the rest of the GOP caucus made with conservatives to get over the finish line.

A leading pro-life group applauded the vote and indicated an assortative pro-life agenda was in the offing now that the Speaker race is done.

SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser told LifeNews she looked forward to working with McCarthy and other Republican leaders to advance the pro-life cause.

“We congratulate Speaker McCarthy and welcome a new direction in the House after four years of pro-abortion Democrat control, led by Nancy Pelosi,” she said. “Under Speaker McCarthy’s leadership, the GOP House majority will use their investigative and oversight powers to expose the radical Biden-Schumer agenda of abortion on demand without limits.

“We look forward to working with Speaker McCarthy, GOP leadership and all our pro-life House allies to advance federal legislation that protects unborn children and their mothers from the horror of abortion,” she added.

Top bills House Republicans will advance include bills against taxpayer funding of abortion and one to protect babies who survive abortions that Nancy Pelosi refused a vote on 80 times.
