Although he had faced stiff opposition, Lee Carhart, the grandson of infamous third trimester abortionist, LeRoy Carhart, has opened an abortion clinic in Pueblo, Colorado.

His Clinics for Abortions and Reproductive Excellence (CARE) facility will initially perform only “medication abortions” (at $700) but Carhart said “the clinic also plans to eventually offer surgical abortion services up to 24 weeks of pregnancy,” according to Anna Lynn Winfrey.

His grandfather is the owner and medical director of the CARE clinics in Maryland and Nebraska.

Carhart Jr. was licensed to practice medicine in Colorado on October 19, but it was not clear whether the younger Carhart is himself an abortionist. “Carhart clarified that the elder Carhart is not medically involved at the Pueblo location.”

According to Winfrey, the younger Carhart opened his abortion clinic in Pueblo’s Bessemer neighborhood on Dec. 5, “a full week before city council tabled an ordinance that would have effectively banned abortion services within city limits.” Councilwoman Regina Maestri  introduced an ordinance to protect unborn babies in Pueblo, but the city council did not back the proposal because “Colorado law prohibits local governments from blocking access to reproductive health care, including abortions,” Winfrey reported.

“City Attorney Dan Kogovsek told councilors that Colorado’s attorney general, Phil Weiser, would likely sue the city if the ordinance passed.” The council then voted 4-3 to table the proposal.

Public documents “show that a CARE clinic in Colorado has been in the works for nearly six months. Carhart registered a limited liability company with the Colorado Secretary of State on June 28 and filed articles of incorporation for a Colorado nonprofit on July 13,” Winfrey reported. “The clinic building was purchased by Carhart on Sept. 19 for $365,000, documents from the Pueblo County assessor’s office show.”

Veteran pro-lifers will recall that Carhart was at the heart of two abortion cases that reached the Supreme Court: Stenberg v. Carhart, in which the Supreme Court overturned a Nebraska ban on partial-birth abortions, and Gonzales v. Carhart, in which the Supreme Court upheld the federal ban on partial-birth abortions.

Carhart fled Nebraska for Germantown, Maryland (and subsequently Bethesda, Maryland) which has infinitely less protective laws and set up his grisly trade in which he aborts unborn babies up to and well beyond 28 weeks.
