Congress will consider a bill to reign in Joe Biden’s pro-abortion actions when Republicans take control of the U.S. House in January.

Sponsored by U.S. Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Oklahoma, the Protecting Life from Chemical Abortions Act would prohibit the Biden administration from using a public health emergency declaration to expand the killing of unborn babies in abortions, as some abortion activists have suggested he doThe Oklahoma City Sentinel reports.

Hern said he wants to ensure Americans can continue to protect unborn babies from abortion now that the U.S. Supreme Court has restored the issue back to the people.

“President Biden’s abuse of executive power has gone on long enough,” he told the newspaper in a statement. “Biden’s pattern is alarming; time and time again, he disregards the rule of law to cave to the radical left’s demands. It’s time to restore order and integrity. I’m proud to introduce this legislation to push back against executive overreach and protect life across the country.”

His bill also would protect women and babies from dangerous abortion drugs by ending a Biden administration decision to allow the drugs to be sold through the mail without ever seeing a doctor. The legislation would restore safety regulations previously put in place by the Food and Drug Administration, according to the report.

Pro-life leaders thanked Hern for taking action. Penny Nance, CEO and president of Concerned Women for America, said Biden’s actions have been reckless and dangerous for both mothers and children.

“Caving to pressure from activist groups like Planned Parenthood, ACLU, and others, his administration removed safety guidelines that protect women from taking mail-order abortion drugs outside the oversight or care of a doctor,” Nance said. “This is reckless and puts lives of women and their unborn children at serious health risk. … I support Rep. Hern’s bill because it will prevent this abuse.”

Hon. Marilyn Musgrave, vice president of government affairs for Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said her organization also supports the bill.

“We thank Congressman Hern for this thoughtful proposal that rolls back the FDA’s overstep and includes necessary abortion reporting requirements to protect unborn children and their mothers,” Musgrave said.

The legislation has a chance of passing the U.S. House when Republicans take control in January. However, Democrats control the U.S. Senate, and there are two pro-abortion Republican senators and only one moderately pro-life Democrat.

On the issue of abortion drugs, the Biden administration is facing several lawsuits for its recent actions.

In November, several doctors and medical associations filed a lawsuit accusing the FDA of “illegally” prioritizing abortion politics over science and patients’ health when it approved the abortion drug mifepristone in 2000 and then expanded its use in 2021.

Separately, the watchdog organization Judicial Watch also sued the Biden administration in November for failing to respond to Freedom of Information Act requests about its 2021 decision to allow abortion drugs to be sold through the mail. The organization wants to see the research that the FDA used to determine that the abortion drug is safe enough to be taken without a doctor’s supervision.

Along with millions of unborn babies’ deaths, the FDA has linked mifepristone to at least 26 women’s deaths and 4,000 serious complications between 2000 and 2018. However, under President Barack Obama, the FDA stopped requiring that non-fatal complications from mifepristone be reported. So the numbers almost certainly are much higher.

Studies indicate the risks are more common than what abortion activists often claim, with as many as one in 17 women requiring hospital treatment. A recent study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute found that the rate of abortion-related emergency room visits by women taking the abortion drug increased more than 500 percent between 2002 and 2015.

In England, which began allowing mail-order abortion drugs around the same time as the U.S., new investigations show a huge increase in ambulance calls and reports of coercion and abuse. There also have been reports of late-term babies being born alive at home as a result of mail-order abortion drugs because their mothers did not realize how far along they were.
