Minnesota news outlets reported about a horrific infanticide case this week in which a mother allegedly murdered her 3-month-old son by stabbing him and then throwing his body into a garbage bag in a dumpster.

WJON News reports Fardoussa Abdillahi, 27, of St. Cloud, is facing first-degree murder charges in the 2021 death of her son, and a judge recently decided that she is mentally competent to stand trial.

Reportedly, Abdillahi told authorities that she was struggling with fear, worry and headaches after her son was born because his father denied that the boy was his and refused to help raise him, according to the report.

Police said they arrested the woman on Nov. 28, 2021 after receiving a 911 call from a man who told them that a baby was missing and the mother admitted to throwing her child in a dumpster.

According to Law & Crime, court documents accuse Abdillahi of cutting the baby boy’s throat with a knife, stuffing his body into a garbage bag and then throwing him in a dumpster.

When police arrived at Abdillahi’s apartment, they said they discovered several people who were looking for the baby. According to police, the witnesses said Abdillahi had told them she killed her son and also had called her mother and admitted that she stabbed her son to death.

“Witnesses were unsure at the time if the defendant was being truthful and called the police when they could not find the baby,” according to court documents. They also told police that they “found the defendant crying and alone in her apartment,” and “the defendant repeatedly stated that she had killed her baby and thrown him away.”

Police said Abdillahi told them the same thing, and they found the baby’s body in the dumpster outside the apartment. Afterward, they placed her under immediate arrest.

Infanticide, like abortion, destroys the life of a unique and valuable child who is fully dependent on his/her parents to survive. The pro-life movement works to protect newborns from infanticide as well as abortion by supporting safe haven laws, adoption and resources to help pregnant and parenting families.

All 50 states have safe haven laws that allow mothers to safely surrender their newborns to authorities, often at a police station or hospital, without repercussions as long as the infant is unharmed. Typically, laws allow safe surrender within a certain time limit, such as up to 30 days after the baby’s birth. Indiana and several other states also have heated baby boxes where women can safely surrender newborns.
