Former Vice President Mike Pence reflected Sunday on the Trump administration’s involvement in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, describing the life-saving ruling as perhaps its “most consequential legacy.”

Speaking with NBC host Chuck Todd, Pence said he believes the June ruling Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health presents a great opportunity to restore a culture of life in America.

“After 49 years, with three Supreme Court justices appointed by our administration, we gave the American people a new beginning for life,” Pence said. “The Dobbs decision not just overturned Roe v. Wade, but it returned the question of abortion to the states and to the American people, and I celebrate that from the depths of my heart.”

After becoming a Christian as a young man, Pence said he knew that he must champion unborn babies’ right to life, first in Congress then as governor of Indiana and then as vice president of the United States.

“… to have been part of an administration that gave the American people this new beginning for life is something I’ll cherish the rest of my life,” he said.

When Todd asked if he believes the Supreme Court appointments and the Dobbs ruling are the greatest achievements of the Trump administration, he responded: “I truly believe the opportunity to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law may be among the most consequential legacies of the Trump-Pence administration, if not the most consequential.”

The former vice president acknowledged that the abortion battle is far from over, and pro-life advocates still have a lot of work to do to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law. But Pence said the overturning of Roe also presents new opportunities to protect unborn babies and support families in need.

“It may take as many years to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law in every state in this country as it took to overturn Roe v. Wade,” he said.

Pence expressed hope that Americans will redouble their efforts to help families in need, especially women in crisis pregnancy situations. As the freest and most prosperous nation in the history of the world, he said he believes the country can become a society where every child is cherished.

“I’d like to see us live out the idea that there is no unwanted child,” he said.

Asked about U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s 15-week abortion ban, Pence said he would have supported it if he still was serving in Congress.

“It was useful in the sense of demonstrating that Democrats’ position is the extreme position,” Pence said. “The Democratic Party today supports abortion on demand up to the moment of birth and taxpayer funding of abortion.”

In June, the Supreme Court overturned Roe in a historic victory for life and returned the power to legislate abortion to the people. Because of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, states may protect unborn babies from abortion for the first time in nearly 50 years. New research estimates state pro-life laws have saved as many as 10,000 unborn babies’ lives since June.

Currently, 13 states are enforcing pro-life laws that ban or strictly limit abortions, and nine others are fighting in court to do the same.
