Pro-life Republican leader Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be the first female governor of Arkansas in 2023.
On Tuesday, voters overwhelmingly approved the former White House Press Secretary to be their governor, defeating Democrat candidate Chris Jones by nearly 30 percent, NPR reports.
Sanders is one of three pro-life Republican women who won major races in Arkansas and Alabama on Tuesday. Katie Britt, the newly elected U.S. Senator of Alabama, and Arkansas Lt. Governor-elect Leslie Rutledge also are the first women to hold the offices.
In a statement after her victory, Sanders promised to work for Arkansas families.
“I want to be governor for all Arkansans, including those who didn’t vote for me. Together we can make our state the best place in America to live, work, and raise a family,” she said.
Sanders, who received endorsements from top pro-life organizations, demonstrated her strength and integrity in the White House under President Donald Trump. There, she constantly endured racist and sexist insults from abortion activists, politicians and the mainstream media, for defending unborn babies’ right to life.

“Throughout her career, Sarah Huckabee Sanders has demonstrated that she is unapologetically pro-life and unafraid to be a voice for the voiceless,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Unborn children and their mothers in Arkansas will have a champion in Sarah Huckabee Sanders as governor.”
Joining Sanders will be Leslie Rutledge, whom Arkansas voters elected to be their first female lieutenant governor, the Democrat Gazette reports.
Rutledge, a pro-life Republican, currently serves as the state attorney general where she has fought to defend state laws that protect unborn babies from abortion. In September, she joined other pro-life state attorneys general in suing the Biden administration for trying to force VA hospitals in pro-life states to abort unborn babies.
Arkansas is one of 13 states that protects unborn babies by banning abortions now that Roe v. Wade is gone. While abortion was legal, about 3,100 unborn babies were aborted in the state every year.
In Alabama, which also bans abortions, voters chose young pro-life advocate and mother Katie Britt to represent them in the U.S. Senate. According to the Alabama Political Reporter, Britt won by a landslide against Democrat candidate Will Boyd.
Among her top priorities is fighting for children, born and unborn, across America.
“I am always going to fight for our children. I believe with all of my heart that every single child, regardless of their zip code deserves an opportunity for the American dream. And I will never stop working and so that’s a reality,” Britt said in a victory speech, according to the report.
Nationwide election results show Republicans likely winning back the U.S. House. However, control of the U.S. Senate remains uncertain.
