The lone abortion facility in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, almost went bankrupt earlier this year because so few women went there to abort their unborn babies.
However, the Athena Health Centre remains open after its owner begged pro-abortion government leaders for taxpayer funding and they complied, according to a CBC report this week.
Records between the abortion facility and the Department of Health and Community Services show just how much of a money-making business aborting unborn babies is. According to the report, Athena made about $809,000 for doing 924 abortions in 2019 at its St. John’s, Corner Brook and Grand Falls-Windsor locations.
The abortion facility began struggling in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic because fewer women were coming there to abort their unborn babies. CBC reports it did about 100 fewer abortions (an 11-percent drop), which meant about $84,000 less revenue.
At the end of 2020, clinic co-owner Rolanda Ryan wrote to the Canadian health department asking for $1 million in taxpayer funding to keep her abortion facility open, the report continues. Without the money, she said they would have to file for bankruptcy.
“A fixed-revenue stream would secure our clinic’s existence,” Ryan told the government. “Such a funding model will ensure stability for our clinic operations while also reducing hospital-based abortion[s].”

In a follow-up letter, she described their financial situation as “quite dire,” writing, “To keep our doors open, we really need a bulk funding model or a significant increase in our facility fee.”
Earlier this year, the government, under pro-abortion Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, granted her request and began sending installments of $1 million tax dollars to the abortion facility, according to the report.
“I did not want to shut the clinic down and it was truly a last resort,” Ryan told Radio-Canada last week. “I do the work because I truly, in my soul, feel this is such good work. People need this service.”
But abortions are not real health care. Abortions do not heal, they destroy lives. Research by the Charlotte Lozier Institute found 96 percent of abortions in the U.S. were for elective/unspecified reasons, while only 4 percent were because of rape/incest, fetal abnormality or the mother’s health.
Tens of thousands of medical professionals also confirm that abortions are not health care and unborn babies are second patients who deserve the same care as their mothers.
As prominent OB-GYN Dr. Monique Chireau Wubbenhorst told U.S. Congress in September: “Abortion not only poses risk to the mother. It is always lethal to an unborn child. It is my opinion that abortion is not health care. … The goal of any abortion is … to kill the embryo or fetus, which is a human being.”
Canada does not have any restrictions on abortion. Unborn babies may be aborted for any reason up to birth and taxpayers are forced to fund the life-destroying practice.
