Today, Ohio Right to Life (ORTL) issued a letter to Bowling Green City Council urging them to vote down Proposed Ordinance 9031 that would make mothers seeking an abortion a “protected class.” In Ohio Right to Life’s letter, they stated that as written, the amendment violates free speech protected by the First Amendment, and that if passed by the Council, the ordinance will be challenged in court by many organizations, including ORTL.

The ordinance was first introduced on October 3rd. In the second reading of the ordinance on October 17th, over 150 individuals from the area came to speak out against it.

The amendment will force local pro-life pregnancy resource centers to employ individuals who oppose the organizations’ fundamental pro-life vision and mission, or risk criminal and civil penalties.

Ohio Right to Life’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Range, said

“Our pregnancy resource centers around the state of Ohio are such a gift for moms, dads, and babies in need. No matter what side of the political aisle you are on, we should all be supporting these organizations which provide resources like food, clothing, diapers, rental assistance, and so much more to moms in need. Yet for some strange reason, instead of supporting them, the left is literally attacking these centers. There have been 73 physical attacks against these centers around the country this past year, as well as federal, state, and city legislation aimed at stopping or hindering the work they do to provide assistance to women.

“It’s sad that some on Bowling Green City Council are attempting to follow the progressive playbook to harm their local pregnancy center or those who simply support life in the community by proposing this disguised amendment. There is no need for this amendment—and quite frankly its anti-woman, anti-mom, anti-child, and ultimately anti-free speech. Please contact Bowling Green City Council and urge them to vote down this proposal.”
