Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is dangerously close to losing reelection in Michigan as Republican challenger Tudor Dixon continues to close the gap, according to a new poll.

Dixon, formerly a conservative commentator on weekly program America’s Voice Live, is well within the margin of error after receiving 44.8% of likely votes, just 3% less than Whitmer who polled at 47.8%, Real Clear Politics reported. Whitmer, who has been governor since 2019, has slowly lost support since May when a Target-Insyght/MIRS poll showed her 37 points ahead of Dixon.

“Voters of all backgrounds are tired of being crushed by radical liberal politicians and their tone-deaf policies. Families are struggling to make ends meet as they get no relief from Biden-Whitmer’s inflation, rising gas and grocery prices, and skyrocketing violent crime,” Dixon said in a Friday press release obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Dixon also announced in the release she had been endorsed by Tulsi Gabbard.

Gabbard, a former Democrat who was the U.S. representative for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district from 2013 to 2021, endorsed Dixon on Friday pointing to another possible climb in the polls, according to the release. The former Democratic Congresswoman left the Democrat party because she believed the party is now “under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness,” she said.

“Today’s Democratic Party has moved so far left and is out of touch with reality. They have abandoned American principles to instead focus on their unpopular woke agenda. Tulsi understands that and has been a voice of reason and common sense across party lines. She is courageously speaking her mind and showing us all what it means to be a leading independent thinker,” Dixon said in the release.

Whitmer has been criticized by Michigan residents for an increase in crime and extreme lockdown’s during the pandemic that led to 37% of small businesses going out of business and 56% being forced to lay off half of their staff, the Michigan Republican Party reported. In contrast, Dixon is dedicated to increasing jobs, improving schools, reducing crime and cutting taxes, a trend seen across Republican platforms in 2022, according to her website.

Whitmer did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
