The first female prime minister of Italy is attracting world-wide attention for her pro-life, pro-family views.

Near-final election results from Sunday show Giorgia Meloni, a conservative Catholic, and the center-right coalition that includes her party, the Brothers of Italy, winning by a landslide, according to Euro News.

The victory is puzzling leftists and mainstream news outlets, which did their best to trash her as “far right” and attempted to link her to fascism.

But Meloni’s pro-family and pro-life views resonated with voters. One of her recent speeches critical of the “woke” left went viral across the world over the weekend. In it, she attributed the attacks against her to “fear” from those who seek power by dehumanizing other human beings.

“Why is the family an enemy? Why is the family so frightening? There is a single answer to all these questions. Because it defines us. Because it is our identity,” she said.

Meloni said it is easier for those in power to enslave people when their identity is taken away.

“I can’t define myself as Italian, a Christian, a woman, a mother,” she said. “No, I must be citizen X, gender X, parent 1, parent 2. I must be a number. Because when I am only a number, when I no longer have an identity or roots, then I will be the perfect slave at the mercy of financial speculators.”

Meloni continued: “… we do not want to be numbers. We will defend the value of the human being. Because each of us has a unique genetic code that is unrepeatable, and, like it or not, that is sacred. We will defend it. We will defend God, country and family.”

Members of the European Union and others have attacked Meloni for supposedly opposing “human rights” because she believes babies in the womb deserve a right to life, Breitbart reports.

To what extent she will act on those beliefs in her new political role, however, is not certain. According to Breitbart, “Meloni, while a Catholic, has promised that she would not crack down on abortion in the country, though has reportedly expressed the desire to see alternatives offered to women wherever possible.”

Abortions are legal up to 90 days in Italy and later in cases where the woman has a physical or mental health risk or when the unborn baby has a deformity. Italy legalized abortion in 1978, but many doctors in the largely Catholic country still refuse to abort unborn babies.

Meanwhile, EU leaders are threatening to punish the new Italian leader and her party if they take action to protect unborn babies from abortion.

Here’s more from Breitbart:

European bigwigs have responded with hostility to the projected election result, with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen threatening that the bloc has certain “tools” it could use to attack Italy should it deviate from the Brussels agenda.

Such threats have now been echoed by France’s Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, who told broadcaster BFMTV that the EU would be watching closely to see if any “human rights” were being put under threat following Sunday’s vote.

The AP reports Meloni’s Italian center-right coalition received 44 percent of the vote, while the center-left received about 26 percent.

“If we are called to govern this nation, we will do it for everyone, we will do it for all Italians and we will do it with the aim of uniting the people (of this country),” she said Monday in a victory speech. “Italy chose us. We will not betray (the country) as we never have.”
