Man Took Pregnant Girlfriend to Abortion Clinic. When She Refused an Abortion, He Killed Her

A Virginia man is accused of shooting his pregnant girlfriend in July, allegedly killing her and her unborn baby a few hours after she refused to go through with an abortion at a Planned Parenthood.

People Magazine reports Emmanuel Dewayne Coble, 27, of Hampton, Virginia, recently was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Raquiah Paulette King, 20, also of Hampton. The Hanover Sheriff’s Office said King’s remains were discovered July 21 near the intersection of Winns Church and Greenwood roads.

King was three-months pregnant with her unborn baby, and authorities said they plan to file charges for the unborn baby’s death, too.

Coble, a U.S. Navy lieutenant, told police that he felt “frustrated” because King changed her mind about the abortion, WRIC News reports.

“Coble admitted that he had taken King to Planned Parenthood in Virginia Beach on July 20, 2022 in order for her to get an abortion,” the investigators wrote in an affidavit. “Coble said that King had told him that the child was his. He said that he paid for the abortion, but he guessed that she’d changed her mind and had kept the child. He said that this ‘frustrated’ him.”

According to investigators, King’s mother, Rachel Pender, said her daughter and Coble were having relationship problems and he “did not want to be a father,” according to the report.

“Rachel Pender reported that Raquiah King had made statements to her that if something was to happen to her, Emmanuel Coble was responsible,” the affidavit states.

Less than 24 hours after King refused to abort her unborn baby, both mother and child were dead, according to authorities. Allegedly, Coble shot her and then dumped her body along the roadside in the early morning hours of July 21, authorities said based on GPS data from his and King’s cell phones.

When Hampton police initially asked Coble about King, Coble said she rented from him, but moved out, the affidavit states. In a later interview, Coble said he took her to get an abortion and was frustrated that she changed her mind, but he took her home. …

Human blood was detected in the trunk of his car, investigators wrote.

Coble is in jail awaiting a hearing on Dec. 6, according to the report.

Virginia law recognizes unborn babies as second victims of violent crimes. Under its 2004 law, “any person who unlawfully, willfully, deliberately, maliciously and with premeditation kills the fetus of another” may be imprisoned from 20 years to life; and any person who does so without premeditation may be imprisoned for not less than five nor more than 40 years.

Many women face pressure to abort their unborn babies, sometimes from employers and others from partners or parents. Frequently, this coercion is coupled with abuse. Homicide is one of the top causes of death among pregnant women, according to a 2021 study in the journal “Obstetrics & Gynecology.”

A 2014 study, “Associations Between Intimate Partner Violence and Termination of Pregnancy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” published in the journal “PLOS Medicine,” found that intimate partner violence, including history of rape, sexual assault, contraception sabotage and coerced decision-making, was associated with abortion.

Another study by the Elliot Institute found a high rate of coerced and forced abortions among post-abortive women, as high as 64 percent.
