7,000 OBGYNs Confirm Abortion is “Not Health Care”

A national medical association that represents 7,000 OB-GYNs is refuting the false claim that killing unborn babies in abortions is “health care.”

The pro-abortion movement and many mainstream news outlets have been repeating the claim frequently since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, but they ignore the many medical doctors who disagree. Tens of thousands of doctors across the U.S. believe unborn babies are second patients in every pregnancy, and their lives are valuable.

This week, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) began a new campaign to help Americans understand that abortions are not health care. It includes a new fact sheet, “Myth vs. Fact: Correcting Misinformation on Maternal Medical Care,” that refutes nine of the most common lies about abortion.

According to AAPLOG, 93 percent of OB-GYNs do not perform elective abortions at all. These doctors do offer life-saving treatment to women suffering from ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages, but they do not include abortions in their practices because abortions are not essential health care.

Part of the problem is the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), which news outlets frequently quote as an unbiased, authoritative source on abortion.

But ACOG is pro-abortion. According to the fact sheet, ACOG has “sidelined science for pro-abortion advocacy” and refuses to represent the diversity of professional views about abortion.

The Federalist reports more: “In fact, ACOG does not support giving patients ultrasounds, ‘which are critical for providing informed consent to a patient’ prior to abortions. It also does not favor restrictions on partial-birth abortions and rarely asks its members how they view abortion overall.”

Another problem with the “abortion is healthcare” myth is that most abortionists do not have a previous relationship with the patient either, according to the fact sheet.

Sometimes, abortionists do not meet the pregnant mother until she is half-naked and laying in stirrups for the abortion. A recent undercover investigation by Live Action found that a Washington, D.C. abortionist refused to meet with a woman until she stripped to the waist and took Xanax, which can cause drowsiness and impair memory.

After the abortion, abortionists “tend to leave the medical care … to other physicians who either have a prior relationship with the patient or who work in her local emergency room,” according to the AAPLOG fact sheet.

Laws that protect unborn babies from abortion do not interfere with the doctor-patient relationship, because that relationship seldom is even there, the medical association continued. Nor is it “an intrusion on the doctor/patient relationship to protect the lives of BOTH of our patients,” the pro-life doctors’ association added.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe on June 24, more than a dozen states have begun enforcing laws that protect unborn babies from abortion. SBA Pro-Life America estimates about 139,000 unborn babies are being saved from abortion as a result, and more state pro-life laws are slated to go into effect soon.
