Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams defended killing nearly fully-formed unborn babies in abortions through the second trimester Sunday, saying God gave women a “free will” to choose abortion.
Abrams, a favorite of the left who has lost election after election in Georgia, is running again against pro-life Republican Gov. Brian Kemp this fall. If elected, she said one of her top priorities will be to repeal the state heartbeat law, which bans abortions once an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable.
Speaking with Yahoo News Sunday, she claimed that she can be a Christian and support abortion on demand.
“While your faith tradition may tell you that you personally do not want to make that choice, it is not my right as a Christian to impose that value system on someone else,” Abrams said. “Because the value that should overhang everything is the right to make our own decisions, the free will that the God I believe in gave us.”
The Democrat candidate is the daughter of two retired United Methodist pastors, according to the report. And Abrams said she supports abortions for any reason up to viability, and later in certain circumstances, because of her Christian faith.
“Arbitrary political parameters make no sense, but it should always be that abortion care is available until a fetus is viable, unless that viability threatens the life of the mother and the health of the mother,” she said.

Abrams also described killing unborn babies in elective abortions as a “medical decision” that women should be allowed to make simply because “they are not ready to be mothers.”
However, an abortion does not stop a woman from becoming a mother. From the moment her baby is conceived, she already is a mother, and an abortion destroys her child’s life.
The Georgia heartbeat law is expected to go into effect soon after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in a historic victory for life. The pro-life law likely will save tens of thousands of unborn babies from abortion. In 2020, 31,248 unborn babies were aborted in Georgia, according to state health department data. More than 60 percent were aborted after six weeks of pregnancy, the point at which an unborn baby’s heartbeat usually is detectable.
Along with the heartbeat law, Georgia also now allows parents to claim unborn babies as dependents on their taxes. State officials will begin counting unborn babies as part of the Georgia population as well.
Polls show Americans are pro-life on abortion, and a new national poll found 75 percent of Americans essentially agree with the Supreme Court overturning Roe.
Despite false reports that abortion bans would prevent doctors from treating pregnant women for miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies, pro-life doctors confirm that is not the case. Some 35 states have laws that make it clear that miscarriage is not abortion and every state with an abortion ban allows treatment for both.
