A Texas university student who rescued a baby boy from a trash can, naked and covered in ant bites, now plans to adopt the child.

The Western Journal reports Jimmy Amisial, 27, a Texas State University university student, found the baby boy in December 2017 while visiting his mother in his native country of Haiti.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, and infant abandonment is a major problem. While walking near his mother’s home, Amisial said he noticed a crowd of people gathered around a trash can and decided to find out what was happening.

“I heard them arguing about what to do with this tiny baby,” he remembered. “Everyone was just staring at him, not a single soul wanted to help. He was crying and had no clothes on and I could see the pain in his eyes. I had to do something.”

Amisial said the baby boy was naked and covered in ant bites. He said he took the baby home to his mother, who helped to wash, feed and clothe the infant, and then they took him to the doctor.

According to the Daily Mail, authorities never found the baby’s parents, and a judge eventually asked Amisial to be the boy’s legal guardian.

The decision was difficult. At the time, Amisial said he was attending college in Texas and struggling to pay for his education.

“But I didn’t have a dad growing up, and this poor child was facing a lifetime of instability and uncertainty,” he said. “Something inside was telling me that this had happened for a reason — so I took a leap of faith. Sometimes you don’t have to know what to do, you just have to be ready to do it.”

He agreed to be the legal guardian for the child with the help of his mother, and they named the boy Emilio Angel Jeremiah. Amisial took time off school to work and care for Emilio. Almost five years later, he still is trying to finish his education, traveling from Haiti to Texas while also working to provide for his mother and Emilio, according to the Mail.

Despite the struggles, he has no regrets. Now, Amisial said he is trying to legally adopt Emilio.

“I truly do feel like a father, and I’m excited to put pen to paper and make Emilio my son. I just need to raise the money first,” he said. “It’s been an incredible journey and watching him grow up has been so rewarding – I’m very proud of him. I had to do what I had to do when no one else wanted to do it, and I’m so grateful for the past four and a half years.”
