Mom Canceled Abortion After Hearing Her Daughter’s Heartbeat: “This Isn’t Just a Clump of Cells”

When 19-year-old Andrea heard her tiny unborn baby’s heart beating while laying on a table in an abortion facility, she knew there was no way she could go through with the abortion.

Speaking with Live Action News, Andrea said she sought an abortion because she felt ashamed to be pregnant at a young age, unmarried and no longer in a relationship with the father.

“I thought, ‘Oh my goodness. This is not a good position to be in,’” she told Live Action. Her friends who had abortions “didn’t seem bothered by them. I thought, ‘Maybe it wouldn’t bother me either.’”

When she told her parents, she said they responded with love and support, and her dad welcomed her to live with him after the baby was born. They did not make her feel guilty or ashamed; those were feelings she put upon herself. Other family and friends encouraged her to consider adoption, but the father of her baby wanted her to have an abortion, she remembered. So, despite the support from her family and friends, she scheduled an appointment at an abortion facility.

What happened next is unusual. Ultrasounds are routine procedures before an abortion, but many post-abortive women and former abortion workers say abortion facilities discourage women from looking at the image of their unborn child.

In Andrea’s case, however, it was different, and it saved her daughter’s life.

According to the report:

Surprisingly, as the ultrasound technician waved the probe back and forth across her belly, she asked Andrea, “Do you want to hear the heartbeat?” Andrea was completely taken aback. “Wait, there’s a heartbeat?” she asked.

When she heard her baby’s heartbeat, she said, “It was like an instant, ‘Oh. This isn’t just flesh, you know, a clump of cells…’ It made it very real for me.” When she left the clinic, she had “an opportunity to reflect, ‘what is this choice going to do to me long-term?’” Andrea began to feel that she would very strongly regret having an abortion and she did not keep her abortion appointment.

The young woman decided to pursue adoption instead and eventually chose a family to raise her daughter. But when Andrea gave birth to Olivia, she could not imagine parting with her.

“The world kind of tells you that all these things need to be perfect – perfect spouse, perfect wedding, perfect finances. … My fears just melted away when I heard her cry out for just a second in the middle of the night, and I woke up,” she told Live Action. “Those mothering instincts just came to me, and I just knew it.”

Andrea raised Olivia for the first two years as a single mother. Then, Olivia’s father decided to become involved in his daughter’s life, too, and continues to be to this day, according to the report.

All that was more than 20 years ago. Today, Olivia is expecting her first child. Recently, she shared her and her mother’s story on Facebook to encourage others to choose life for their babies.

“I hope this encourages just one woman,” Olivia wrote. “If you are debating whether or not to get an abortion, know that in your darkest hour God is with you and He will sustain you. He makes beautiful and wonderful things out of ashes, and even when we can’t see a way out He is paving a way for newness and redemption. I wouldn’t have a life if my mama didn’t lay down her own. That’s what love is, laying down your life for another.”
