Joe Biden erroneously claimed that pro-life states will arrest women who cross state lines to abort their unborn babies during a meeting Friday with pro-abortion Democrat governors.
The meeting happened just one week after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and began allowing states to protect unborn babies from abortion again. While abortionists who kill unborn babies can be prosecuted under new state pro-life laws, women are exempt. The pro-life movement strongly and openly opposes punishing women.
However, Biden made the claim anyway Friday in his public meeting with the governors. He warned that Republican-led states will arrest women under their pro-life laws and Americans will be shocked.
“I think people are going to be shocked when the first state … tries to arrest a woman for crossing a state line to get health services and … I don’t think people believe that’s going to happen, but it’s going to happen,” Biden said. “It’s gonna happen and it’s gonna telegraph to the whole country that this is a gigantic deal.”
He promised that his administration will protect these women and fight against any state that arrests them for traveling across state lines to abort their unborn babies.
But that will not be necessary. Pro-life laws allow charges to be brought against abortionists and sometimes those who aid them in aborting unborn babies in violation of the law. However, they specifically and clearly exempt women from punishment.

The pro-life movement opposes punishing women for abortions because they often are second victims of the profit-driven abortion industry and abusers. In May when it appeared likely that the Supreme Court would overturn Roe, 70 pro-life leaders published an open letter reiterating their strong opposition to punishing women.
“There are two victims in every abortion: the unborn child who loses her life, and her mother who is left abandoned by the abortion industry to deal with any physical complications, as well as the emotional and psychological pain of the abortion trauma for months or even years to come,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, who signed the letter. “This joint letter recognizes that women who have abortions require our compassion and support, not criminalization.”
Women were not arrested for abortions prior to Roe either, according to research by Clarke D. Forsythe, senior legal counsel for Americans United for Life.
A lot of inaccurate information about abortion has been spreading since the Supreme Court ruling last week.
Biden also claimed Friday that the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision takes away Americans’ rights.
“I share the public outrage at this extremist court that’s committed to moving America backwards with fewer rights, less autonomy …” he said, according to The Post Millennial.
Actually, the Supreme Court decision did the opposite. It gives states and voters the right to make their own laws about abortion and it allows states to grant rights to unborn babies. Under Roe, states were forced to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions for any reason up to viability.
Biden also urged the U.S. Senate to end the filibuster and Congress to pass legislation that would force states to legalize abortion on demand again and force taxpayers to pay for them.
Nine Democrat governors participated in the meeting with Biden: New York, North Carolina, New Mexico, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Washington, Oregon and Rhode Island.
The Biden administration’s position on abortion is radical and out of touch with most Americans. Polls consistently show that a strong majority of Americans oppose taxpayer-funded abortions and support strong limits on abortion, especially after the first trimester. “Americans can’t afford to travel or host family and friends this July 4th weekend because of Joe Biden’s reckless agenda. But instead of taking responsibility and addressing voters’ real concerns, Biden is pushing his extremist abortion agenda. Biden is destroying the American dream for all Americans – both those born and unborn,” Andrew Brennan, RNC director of faith communications, told LifeNews in a statement.
