Biden Slams Supreme Court: It’s “Un-American” to Protect Babies from Abortion

Joe Biden decried the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday, saying it is “extreme” and “un-American” to allow states to protect unborn babies from abortion again.

In the historic ruling, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, the high court overturned its 1973 abortion ruling and returned the authority to make decisions about abortion to the states. For nearly 50 years, Roe forced states to legalize abortions up to viability and allowed abortions up to birth, resulting in more than 63 million aborted babies.

The Hill reports the Democrat president criticized the ruling as a “tragic error” and slammed the court as “extreme.”

“It’s a sad day for the country in my view, but it doesn’t mean the fight’s over,” Biden said at the White House soon after the ruling.

He urged Congress to pass a pro-abortion bill that would force states to legalize abortion on demand again and force taxpayers to pay for abortions. The Democrat-controlled U.S. House passed the bill, but the U.S. Senate narrowly rejected it in September.

Biden said voters can change that if they elect more pro-abortion lawmakers to Congress in November.

“This fall, we must elect more senators and representatives who will codify a woman’s right to choose into federal law,” he said. “We need to elect more state leaders to protect this right at the local level. We need to restore the protections of Roe as law of the land.”

In the Dobbs ruling, the Supreme Court said the court was wrong to describe abortion as a constitutional right under Roe because no such right exists.

“The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the majority decision.

However, Biden continued to wrongly insist that the “choice” to abort an unborn baby is a “Constitutional right.”

“The Supreme Court expressly took away a Constitutional right from the American people that it had already recognized,” he said in response to the ruling. “They simply took it away. That’s never been done to a right that is so important to so many Americans.”

One of the ways Biden plans to keep allowing Americans to abort unborn babies is through mail-order abortion drugs. Last year, his administration began allowing the abortion drug mifepristone to be sold through the mail without a doctor’s visit or direct medical supervision. Mifepristone is used to abort unborn babies up to 10 weeks of pregnancy and now accounts for more than half of all abortions in the U.S., according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Biden promised to “protect a woman’s access” to mifepristone and fight against states that ban the abortion drug.

Here’s more from the report:

Biden said he was directing the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that such medications would be available to the “fullest extent possible,” without specifying what measures the department would be taking.

He also vowed that his administration would defend the “bedrock right” of a woman living in a state where abortions are now outlawed to travel to another state where it is available and terminate her pregnancy.

If any state or local official, high or low, tries to interfere with a woman exercising her basic right to travel, I will do everything in my power to fight that deeply un-American attack,” said Biden.

Biden referenced a letter from the pro-abortion American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists while stating that common-sense limitations on abortion pills were “not based on evidence.”

But researchers with the Charlotte Lozier Institute said Biden was wrong to claim the abortion pill is safe because research demonstrates that it will put more women and girls at risk. According to the research group, comprehensive data from a massive Medicaid dataset shows that the rate of abortion pill-related emergency room visits increased over 500% from 2002 through 2015.

The Biden administration’s position on abortion is radical and out of touch with most Americans. Polls consistently show that a strong majority of Americans oppose taxpayer-funded abortions and support strong limits on abortion, especially after the first trimester. LifeNews highlighted 14 recent polls here.

Since Roe in 1973, more than 63 million unborn babies and hundreds of mothers have died in supposedly “safe,” legal abortions. The ruling made the United States one of only seven countries in the world that allowed elective abortions after 20 weeks.

Now, experts predict as many as 26 states will protect unborn babies’ right to life by banning abortions, resulting in hundreds of thousands of babies’ lives being saved.
