A strong majority of Americans believe that unborn babies should have rights, according to a new poll from YouGov and Americans United for Life.

National Review reports the poll found 52 percent of Americans support the U.S. Supreme Court “extending legal rights of personhood to unborn children,” while even stronger majorities believe unborn babies have the right to be born and to be free from violence.

First reported at National Review, the poll asked questions about abortion and rights for unborn babies to 1,000 people. Of those, 39 percent identified as pro-choice, 32 percent as pro-life and 29 percent did not choose either label.

Some of the questions were unique, specifically asking about the rights of babies before birth. According to the report, the poll found that 51 percent believe abortion ends the life of a human being, and 55 percent believe an unborn baby is a person either at the moment of conception or within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Here’s more from the report:

Meanwhile, supermajorities believe unborn children have a number of rights, including the right to be born (80 percent), the right to be protected from violence or assault (89 percent), and the right to be protected against substance abuse (90 percent). …

At the same time, however, only 44 percent of respondents said they’d support state lawmakers having the power to prohibit abortion, an interesting discrepancy.

YouGov conducted the poll after Politico reported about a leaked draft ruling that shows the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade this summer.

Catherine Glenn Foster, president and CEO of Americans United for Life, said the poll shows a need for action to guarantee basic rights to unborn babies.

“As crucial as the encouragement of public opinion is for the human right to life, what will most be needed post-Roe are brave and courageous political leaders who are willing to act to restore the human right to life in its fullness and to protect it for all time to come,” Foster said in a statement.

Polls consistently show that a strong majority of Americans support stronger legal protections for unborn babies.

LifeNews highlighted 14 recent polls, all of which show public support for pro-life laws. A few examples from the list:

  • May 2022: A Rasmussen/RMG Research poll shows 65% of Americans essentially want Roe overturned.
  • May 2022: A new Trafalgar/Convention of States poll shows 57.6% of Americans believe all abortions should be banned or banned when an unborn baby’s heartbeat can be detected.
  • January 2022: A Marist poll found 71% of Americans want abortions to be illegal or more limited, which essentially supports overturning Roe.
  • December 2021: A Harvard-Harris poll found found 32% of Americans want to repeal Roe v. Wade entirely and another 24% of Americans believe the Supreme Court should uphold the Mississippi abortion ban at issue in the recent Supreme Court case, which bans abortions on unborn babies up to 15 weeks. That’s 56% of Americans who are for overturning completely or setting the abortion limit at 15 weeks, which can be done by overturning Roe.

Since Roe in 1973, more than 63 million unborn babies and hundreds of mothers have died in supposedly “safe, legal” abortions.

Now, the Supreme Court is considering a Mississippi abortion case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, that could overturn Roe and allow states to protect babies from abortion again. A ruling is expected soon, potentially at the end of the month.
