An Illinois man accused of barbarically decapitating his pregnant ex-girlfriend has been charged with homicide in the deaths of the woman and her unborn baby.

The New York Post reports Deundrea Holloway, 22, of Alton, Illinois, faces two first-degree murder charges in the death of Liese Dodd, 22, and two charges of intentional homicide of an unborn child in the death of her daughter.

“What was observed, what was learned, what was found, is absolutely terrible,” Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “She was decapitated by a freaking savage monster.”

Police said Dodd’s mother, Heidi Noel, found her daughter’s remains Thursday evening inside the young woman’s home in Alton and called police, according to the report. Police said they found the young woman’s head in the trash outside.

Dodd was eight-months pregnant with a daughter, her first child. It is not clear if Holloway was the child’s father, the report states.

Noel told KMOV that she went to check on her daughter that day because Dodd had not responded to her in a while and her relationship with Holloway was not good.

“I just wish she would’ve known how loved she was,” Noel said. “That she wouldn’t have ever been alone, [and] that she could’ve gotten out of this relationship and had a full life.”

Noel they had been planning a baby shower for Dodd at the end of the month.

“I had just sent out invitations the prior Saturday for the baby shower. We were just excited and gathering the items you need to have a baby,” she said. “She wasn’t set on a name yet. [She] said ‘my little bean.’ So, we essentially were calling the baby ‘baby bean.’”

Police said they arrested Holloway earlier Thursday for an unrelated crime; he allegedly stole a bicycle, and police said he resisted arrest and refused to give his name. Later, police said they connected Holloway to the murders.

Homicide is one of the top causes of death among pregnant women, according to a 2021 study in the journal “Obstetrics & Gynecology.”  The crime is doubly horrific because it almost always kills a baby in the womb as well as its mother.

According to National Right to Life, 38 states recognize the unlawful killing of a baby in the womb as homicide in at least some circumstances. The federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act also provides justice to unborn victims of federal and military crimes.

Notably, New York lawmakers repealed their state fetal homicide law in 2019 as part of a larger pro-abortion law.
