In 1971, “Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers,” composed by Leonard Bernstein, premiered at the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. As the Latin liturgy is recited, all sorts of shenanigans take place onstage.
I was too young to have been aware of it at the time but because “Mass” is a sacrilegious bit of “theater” deeply offensive to Catholics, it resurfaces now and again. One line from one song that I happened to hear has stuck with me:
“If we can’t have the world we desire/Lord, we’ll have to set this one on fire.”
This line is appropriate to recall each time we hear about a bit of lunacy from the left concerning the probable overturning of Roe v. Wade this month. As reported here in LifeNews, the Department of Homeland Security has warned that radical abortion activists are threatening to burn down or storm the Supreme Court building and murder justices and their law clerks if the court overturns Roe.
“This already has started,” LifeNews notes. “Dozens of churches, pro-life organizations and individuals have been targets of arson, vandalism, assault, threats and harassment since the leak.”

Now, a group calling itself #ShutdownDC is planning to block the streets around the Supreme Court on June 13. The opinion in the Dobbs case that could overturn Roe potentially might be released that day but no one can predict that. What seems more predictable are the insane antics of these pro-abortion forces.
What is wrong with these people? The Roe decision in 1973 was a catalyst for the pro-life movement and led to the founding, the following year, of the March for Life. Now every January (pandemics notwithstanding) hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country gather in DC to protest the legal slaughter of children. It is always a peaceful protest, unless abortion-loving counter protesters start behaving badly. They are the ones arrested, not us.
We are protesting up to a million murders every year! Why are they the ones who are angry?
The Democrats elected to represent Americans also are planning to set the world on fire, so to speak, through their political antics. The recent rant by Democrat Rep. Mondaire Jones threatened packing the Supreme Court with enough liberal justices to overcome the conservative tilt of the Court, and ending the filibuster in the Senate that requires at least a semblance of bipartisan support for bills to pass. Without the filibuster, the Democrats would be able to pass the most radical abortion bill that our nation – indeed, our world – has ever seen. They’ve already tried.
Other Democrats – those serving as district attorneys and attorneys general – have vowed not to enforce laws passed on the state level to protect the unborn and their mothers. We already know the abortion cartel pays no attention to laws, but it’s something else again to hear people who were elected to do just that say they will overlook any laws that don’t align with their own (twisted) values.
If they can’t have the world they desire … We’ve been warned. What we as law-abiding, Constitution-loving pro-life people must do now is continue to give the good example of utilizing our First Amendment rights in organized, peaceful ways and continue to elect public servants who know the difference between serving the public and killing the public.
The way we are called to set the world on fire is by awakening consciences with the truth and the Spirit of God.
