Some 48 Republican members of the Senate have signed a letter telling Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer they will filibuster any legislation forcing Americans to fund abortions.

Earlier this year, Joe Biden and Senate Democrats put together a budget plan to eliminate the Hyde Amendment and force Americans to fund abortions for the first time since Hyde became official in the 1970s. Although Americans are forced to fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business and its global abortion agenda with their federal tax dollars, Americans have not generally paid for abortions with their tax dollars since Hyde became an annually adopted provision in Congressional spending bills.

The Hyde Amendment has saved at least 2.5 million babies from abortion and it enjoys the support of a majority of Americans — including people who support abortion. But Democrats have desperately been trying to eliminate it and eliminate more unborn children.

In March, pro-life Republicans — along with Senator Joe Manchin, the only pro-life Democrat — forced Democrats to withdraw their objections to Hyde in order to get the current spending bill moving forward to fund the federal government.

Because Biden and his pro-abortion Democrat comrades are not giving up on making Americans fund abortions, every pro-life Republican in the Senate has said they will filibuster any abortion funding bill. The Daily Caller first obtained a copy of the letter which was spearheaded by Montana Sen. Steve Daines and Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford and signed by 46 other Republicans.

“We write to express our unwavering support for the Hyde Amendment and all other longstanding pro-life protections. For more than 45 years, the Hyde Amendment has ensured that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions, saving the lives of nearly 2.5 million preborn children. As you know, the Hyde Amendment is supported by both a substantial majority of the American public and a bipartisan majority of sitting United States Senators, and was most recently signed into law by President Biden in Public Law 117-103,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter.

The only two Republicans who did not sign the letter were Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. The Daily Caller reached out to both Collins and Murkowski for comment but did not receive a response.

(DAILY CALLER OBTAINED) — … by Henry Rodgers

“There’s a clear message to Leader Schumer: We will not allow the Democrats to force the American people to foot the bill for their radical abortion agenda. The Hyde Amendment has been the law of the land for over 45 years, and my colleagues and I will ensure it stays that way,” Daines told the Daily Caller before sending the letter.

Joe Biden left the Hyde Amendment out of his proposed budget last year — making his conversation to a full-fledged abortion activist official after supporting it for decades.

Officials with National Right to Life told LifeNews that eliminating the Hyde Amendment destroys over 40 years of previously unprecedented bipartisan support for a measure aimed at saving human lives.

“By eliminating the Hyde Amendment from his proposed budget, President Biden has once again shown his allegiance to the extremism of pro-abortion groups and their allies,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life.

Tobias continued, “This budget proposal is a scorched earth campaign by pro-abortion Democrats who are marching hand in hand with the most extreme demands of the abortion industry to eliminate all limitations on abortion as well as require taxpayer funding of abortion.”

“The Hyde Amendment has proven to be the greatest domestic abortion-reduction measure ever enacted by Congress,” said Jennifer Popik, J.D., legislative director of National Right to Life. “The Hyde Amendment is widely recognized as having saved over two million American lives since it was first adopted in 1976.”

Popik continued, “The Hyde Amendment’s life-affirming impact cannot be overstated.”

Polling repeatedly shows Americans support the Hyde Amendment.

A 2019 Politico/Morning Consult poll found that 49% supported the Hyde Amendment while only 33% opposed it. In 2020, a Marist poll found that those opposed to federal funding of abortions held firm with 60% of Americans opposed.

And a January Marist poll found that a majority of Americans — 54% — oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, and 81% of Americans believe laws can protect both the mother and her unborn child.
