Kamala Harris Says Killing Babies in Abortions is a “Fundamental Right”

Destroying another human being’s life cannot possibly be a “fundamental right,” but Vice President Kamala Harris thinks it is.

On Thursday at the White House, Harris praised a group of abortionists for their work aborting unborn babies while describing abortion as a “fundamental right,” The Hill reports. She hosted the virtual meeting with abortionists from California, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas to discuss the U.S. Supreme Court likely overturning Roe v. Wade this summer.

“Overturning Roe opens the door to restricting those rights,” Harris said at the beginning of the meeting. “It would be a direct assault on the fundamental right of self-determination — to live and love without interference from the government.”

Many expect the Supreme Court will overturn Roe this summer after a leaked draft shows the majority ruling against the 1973 abortion decision in the Mississippi case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. If that happens, states will be allowed to protect unborn babies again, and experts predict as many as 26 will do so.

Right before the meeting Thursday, the Oklahoma legislature passed a law to protect unborn babies by banning abortions from the moment of conception, with limited exceptions. Harris blasted the action, calling it “outrageous” that Oklahomans want to protect unborn babies’ right to life.

“It’s outrageous, and it’s just the latest in a series of extreme laws from around the country,” Harris said, adding that pro-lifers just want to “punish and control women.”

However, the Oklahoma legislation does not punish women, and the pro-life movement has been very clear that it opposes laws that would do so. Last week, 70 pro-life leaders released a joint letter saying the pro-life movement never has and never will support punishing mothers for abortions.

Harris also claimed overturning Roe would threaten other rights, including birth control and gay marriage, according to The Hill. Many expected the virtual meeting Thursday to be public, but the White House cut off the livestream immediately after Harris’s opening remarks.

Responding afterward, Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, told LifeNews that Harris is wrong about Americans’ rights being in jeopardy if the Supreme Court overturns Roe.

“The vice president is wrong,” Pavone said. “… the Supreme Court has acknowledged multiple times that abortion is a unique act. It is sui generis, because unlike any of the other privacy rights, it involves a second life.”

In a 1980 ruling that upheld the Hyde Amendment, which bans taxpayer funding for elective abortions in Medicaid, Pavone said the Supreme Court agreed that abortion is not like other medical procedures because it “involves the purposeful termination of a potential life.”

Later, in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the court said: “Abortion is a unique act. It is an act fraught with consequences for others” including “the life or potential life that is aborted.”

Pavone said the vice president is just fear-mongering about the Mississippi abortion case.

“VP Harris is merely catering to the abortion-hungry mob in stating that the Dobbs case will impact anything other than abortion,” Pavone said.

Abortion destroys unborn babies’ fundamental right to life. Since Roe in 1973, more than 63 million unborn babies have been legally aborted in the U.S.
