Pro-Life Democrat Legislator Blasts Her Party for Pushing Abortions Up to Birth

Connecticut state Rep. Trenee McGee holds what many Americans would consider to be mutually exclusive beliefs: She is both pro-life and a Democrat.

However, McGee, who represents the New Haven area, believes that is partly her own party’s fault, and she has no qualms about criticizing Democrat leaders for their increasingly out-of-touch pro-abortion agenda.

During an interview May 13 on The Church Politics Podcast, she criticized Democratic Party leaders for pushing out pro-life lawmakers who believe in protecting the most vulnerable from conception to natural death, according to Christianity Daily.

McGee told the CT Mirror that there still are a lot of pro-life Democrat voters but fewer and fewer pro-life Democrat politicians, due to the party’s growing extremism.

She pointed out how the party platform, up until 2016, called for “reduc[ing] the need for abortions” and making them “rare.” In 2020, however, the party removed all that language, she said. Now, the Democratic Party is going along with the pro-abortion movement’s agenda.

“Right now, the pro-choice movement has taken a switch, from tweets that were once like ‘being a mom, you’re superhero’ to now ‘being a mom is a burden,’” McGee said.

McGee went on to praise Oklahoma’s pro-life pregnancy crisis centers that have been proving the compassionate basis of the pro-life movement since they are staffed with volunteers who dedicate their lives to truly caring for mothers. She highlighted that pregnancy centers holistically meet the clothing, food insecurity, food challenges, housing challenges, and other needs of mothers.

“We realize that if we empower moms, then they will be more inclined to make decisions to keep their babies,” McGee underscored.

She told the Mirror that she does not plan to switch parties because she still believes in many things the Democratic Party is advocating for, including plans to expand health care and eliminate student debt, but she will continue to stand for unborn babies’ right to life.

“I knew that I would be kind of like a unicorn, and knew that I would be different, that my perspectives would be different, that I would oftentimes challenge my own party. And then I thought, ‘That’s OK.’ I would rather be honest,” McGee said. “I would rather walk away from something having been honest, and maybe disliked, than to have been liked by everyone and dishonest.”

Polls consistently show that most Americans support strong legal protections for unborn babies. LifeNews highlighted 11 recent polls here. A new Rasmussen poll found more Americans want Roe v. Wade overturned (48 percent) than want the ruling to remain in place (45 percent).

In contrast, the Democratic Party supports abortions for any reason without restriction and wants to force taxpayers to pay for them — positions that are widely opposed by the American people.
