A case of infanticide in Mississippi has people shaken given its brutality.

A woman in Pearl, Mississippi has been charged with capital murder after she reportedly threw her 9-week-old baby girl into the road, killing her. Makaylia Shaylynn Jolley, 20, has been charged with “repeatedly and forcibly” striking her daughter Khalysie Lashay Jolley on the road.

After neighbors saw what was happening, they called 911 and Jolley ran off into the woods. Little Khalysie was rushed to the hospital but died of her injuries.

Jolley now faces life in prison or possibly the death penalty for killing her child.

Neighbors tell local media they were shocked by her actions.

“Something had to go wrong—postpartum, or something,” a neighbor told WAPT. “Because she really is a very good mother. I don’t understand what happened.”

“The Good Lord figures this baby is too good for this world,” Police Chief Dean Scott said. “The act was very deliberate and intentional. She showed no remorse throughout the day.”

Pearl officials confirmed that her daughter, Khalysie Lashay Jolley, died Saturday at 4:33 p.m. in the hospital. Jolley faces life in prison as well as the possibility of the death penalty.

Pearl police say Jolley repeatedly and “forcibly” threw her daughter onto Bierdeman Road. Several calls were made to 911 at about 2 p.m. Thursday reporting the incident, according to city spokesman Greg Flynn.

When the fire department and paramedics arrived, they administered first aid before taking the child to Children’s Hospital of Mississippi in Jackson, where she was listed in critical condition.

“We shut the city of Pearl down,” Chief Dean Scott said. “She was heavily escorted, I’ll say that.”

Officials said the mother was chased into a nearby wooded area where she was taken into custody.
