With the Supreme Court likely to overturn Roe v. Wade and the day finally arriving that states can legally protect babies from abortion, abortion activists are screaming that pro-life Americans want to criminalize women who have abortions.
But that’s not going to happen.
Just like when a baby is killed after birth, when a baby is killed before birth someone has to be held criminally accountable for killing the baby. Why not the mother?
As leaders of 70 pro-life groups explain, the mother is often a second victim in aboritons. “Safe, legal” abortions often kill or injure women. Many women feel pressured or coerced into having an abortion, studies show. In other cases young women are not properly taught how their developing child is really a human being, a unique baby with a right to life rather than a clump of cells.
And the abortion industry lies to women every day about the humanity of their unborn child and the risks of and alternatives to abortion as they try to sell as many abortions as possible.
So who should be held accountable? The answer is the abortionist — the one killing the baby in the first place. And if abortionists are held criminally liable for the babies they illegally kill under an abortion ban (and abortion pill sellers are held criminally liable for selling dangerous abortion drugs) then the supply of abortions ends.
This was the focus in abortion bans before Roe — which is why women were never sent to prison for having illegal abortions, despite false pro-abortion claims to the contrary.

That’s why dozens of pro-life groups across America today are banding together to say they will oppose potential abortion bans that criminalize women. They say they will focus on passing pro-life laws making abortions illegal that focus on abortionists and abortion pill sellers.
As national and state pro-life organizations, representing tens of millions of pro-life men, women, and children across the country, let us be clear: We state unequivocally that any measure seeking to criminalize or punish women is not pro-life and we stand firmly opposed to such efforts.If the Supreme Court does overturn Roe v. Wade, they will be honoring the unambiguous division of powers described in the Constitution, returning abortion policymaking back to our elected state and federal legislators. This will be a tremendous opportunity for states to create durable policy that can stand the test of time. But in seizing that opportunity, we must ensure that the laws we advance to protect unborn children do not harm their mothers.We are America’s leading advocates for life. We come from very different backgrounds and perspectives, but we are united in our mission to protect unborn children and American women from the greed of the abortion industry. We have been in this fight for decades – many of us have dedicated our lives to this cause. We understand better than anyone else the desire to punish the purveyors of abortion who act callously and without regard to the dignity of human life. But turning women who have abortions into criminals is not the way.
