Ted Cruz Tells DC Mayor: Deaths 5 Full-Term Aborted Babies Must be Investigated

Sen. Ted Cruz demanded that Washington, D.C. authorities preserve the bodies of five late-term, potentially illegally aborted babies for an investigation in a letter over the weekend.

Writing to Mayor Muriel Bowser and Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee III, Cruz expressed concern that city officials may “destroy evidence of serious alleged violations of federal law” by incinerating the babies’ bodies, Live Action News reports.

Cruz, a Texas Republican, shared the letter Saturday on Twitter amid growing calls for an investigation into the babies’ deaths.

Pro-life advocates with the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) said they found the bodies of the five late-term aborted babies in late March in boxes from the Washington Surgi-Clinic, a late-term abortion facility in Washington, D.C.

PAAU leader Lauren Handy said the babies appeared to be “so advanced in their gestational age and the patterns in their wounds suggest violent federal crimes.” Pro-life and Republican leaders are urging city and federal authorities to investigate if the babies were illegally killed in violation of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban or the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act.

The D.C. police have custody of the bodies, but they have refused to investigate if the babies were victims of crimes, according to Fox News.

Cruz criticized city leaders for refusing to perform autopsies on the babies and reminded them of their duty to preserve the babies’ bodies as evidence of possible crimes.

“It appears that the Metropolitan Police Department has assumed the cause and nature of these children’s deaths without an investigation,” he wrote. “It has recently been brought to my attention that the D.C. government may incinerate the bodies of these five children without conducting an investigation, without performing any autopsies, and without affording these children a proper, respectful burial.”

Pointing out that U.S. Congress has jurisdiction over Washington, D.C., Cruz continued, “This oversight role is especially critical when it appears that the executive leadership of Washington D.C. may destroy evidence of serious alleged violations of federal law involving constitutional issues.”

He reminded Bowser and Contee of their “obligations to preserve evidence for future Congressional oversight hearings.” Cruz also promised that, if Republicans regain control of Congress in November, which appears likely, that he will conduct investigative hearings to determine if the babies were aborted in violation of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban or Born-Alive Infants Protection Act.

Cruz urged Bowser and Contee to direct the D.C. Medical Examiner to conduct an autopsy of each baby’s body, or, at the very least, preserve the bodies so that Congress may do so.

Last week, Cruz also joined dozens of U.S. Congressional leaders in demanding a federal investigation into the babies’ deaths. However, some expressed doubts that the U.S. Department of Justice will do anything, pointing out that pro-abortion Democrat officials with the Biden administration lead the agency.

Washington, D.C. allows unborn babies to be aborted for basically any reason up to birth, and Washington Surgi-Clinic advertises abortions at “27 plus weeks of pregnancy,” which is long past the point when babies are viable outside the womb.

Years ago in an undercover investigation by Live Action, Washington Surgi-Clinic abortionist Cesare Santangelo admitted that he “probably wouldn’t” help a baby who survives an abortion even though “legally we would be obligated to help.” He later backtracked on that statement in an interview with the Washington Post.

Pro-life leaders named the babies Ángel, Holly, Phoenix, Harriet and Christopher X. They said they also named the 110 first-trimester aborted babies who they found in the boxes and gave them a funeral Mass and burial.

“We cannot build a better world on a pile of murdered children,” PAAU founder Terrisa Bukovinac said. “That’s not progress. Real progress is protecting the vulnerable from exploitation from people like Santangelo who are the true villains here. True progressives must stand up against this injustice.”
