Pro-Abortion Groups Spent $3.7 Billion in 2020 to Promote Killing Babies in Abortions Worldwide

Pro-abortion groups spent a whopping $3.7 billion in 2020 to expand the killing of unborn babies in abortions across the world, according to a new investigation by the Capital Research Center.

It is no secret that pro-abortion groups are vastly more wealthy than pro-life organizations. The world’s richest men, including Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and George Soros, donate millions of dollars to these groups, and many receive millions more in taxpayer funding, thanks to the politicians that they spend huge amounts of cash to get elected.

But 2020 appears to have been a record year for both giving and spending on abortion, The American Conservative reports.

Looking at 188 pro-abortion groups’ IRS disclosures, investigators at Capital Research Center found that Planned Parenthood, NARAL, Marie Stopes International and others spent double what they did just one year earlier: $1.9 billion in 2019 and $3.8 billion in 2020.

In 2020, pro-abortion groups also received $3.4 billion in donations and tax dollars, according to the investigation.

Many of these groups spent their money on electing pro-abortion politicians to office, lobbying states and countries to legalize abortions without limits up to birth, and running propaganda campaigns to “normalize” do-it-yourself abortions and mail-order abortion drugs. Others invested in “research into second- and third-trimester abortifacients overseas,” the report found.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Planned Parenthood, which does about 40 percent of all abortions in the U.S., was the biggest spender. Its 79 affiliates and PACs spent $1.5 billion in 2020, the investigation found.

The pro-abortion political action group EMILY’s List spent about $80 million on American elections, and international population control groups like the Population Council and Family Health International spent hundreds of millions more pushing to expand abortions across the world, according to the investigation.

Another pro-abortion group, the Massachusetts-based Pathfinder International, which uses American tax dollars to fund “safe” abortions in Africa, Asia and Latin America, spent $121 million in 2020, according to the report.

Hayden Ludwig, senior investigative researcher for the Capital Research Center, said the total spending on abortion actually is an under-count.

He wrote:

By the way, the $3.8 billion figure is a conservative estimate. To show the scale of this industry and preserve transparency, this research (available online) doesn’t include groups like the Center for American Progress or Sierra Club, which support expanded abortion policies but aren’t substantially engaged in abortion advocacy. If we included all pro-abortion groups in this analysis, we would have had to include every group on the left. We also did not include the major funders and foundations backing the abortion industry to show the scale of the activist network. Adding both categories would probably double or even triple the sums.

One notably absent group from the investigation is the American Civil Liberties Union, which works closely with pro-abortion groups to fight pro-life laws in court. However, the ACLU also advocates for issues unrelated to abortion, so its donations and spending are not just centered around abortion.

According to Open Secrets, the national ACLU spent $1.16 million on lobbying in 2020 and received nearly $400,000 in contributions; however, that does not include any of its 50 state affiliates.

Other than governments, major contributors to the abortion industry include billionaires Buffett and Gates, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (co-founder of Hewlett-Packard), John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Ted Turner’s Turner Foundation, according to the report.

This massive wasted spending on destroying children’s lives before birth is beyond tragic, but Ludwig pointed out that all hope is not lost.

“… for all that money, the left is still losing the debate on abortion ‘rights,’” Ludwig said. “Even far-left Daily Beast admits that ‘abortion rights groups won the money game and lost the war.’ Others estimate the left outspends the pro-life right as much as ten-to-one.”

Polls consistently show the American public still strongly opposes abortion on demand. And abortion activists are upset that more people are not outraged by the Texas heartbeat law, which has banned most abortions since September. This summer, many anticipate that the U.S. Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states to protect unborn babies from abortion again.

All this means that the truth ultimately does prevail, and no amount of money can hide the fact that unborn babies are valuable human beings who deserve a right to life.
