Man Sets His Girlfriend on Fire, She is Six Months Pregnant With Twins

A horrific crime in Detroit, Michigan last week serves as a disturbing reminder of how frequently pregnant mothers and their unborn babies are targets of violence.

Fox 2 Detroit reports Detroit Police arrested and charged a man for allegedly setting his pregnant girlfriend on fire after they had an argument Jan. 14 in their home.

The 26-year-old mother, who is more than six months pregnant with twins, has third-degree burns on more than half of her body and is in critical condition in the hospital, according to the report. The health status of her unborn twins was not reported.

Detroit Police arrested and charged the boyfriend, Devonne Marsh, 41, of Detroit, after learning of the incident from an anonymous tipster, according to Newsweek. Police said the victim was afraid that Marsh would hurt her even more if she reported the crime.

Police said Marsh and the victim were arguing in their home on Jan. 14 when Marsh dumped lighter fluid on her and then lit her on fire.

He is charged with assault/bodily harm, assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle, according to the report. The local news noted that Marsh has a lengthy criminal record, including violent crimes.

“How do you do this to another human being? I can’t – it’s unimaginable,” Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis said. “Just incredibly traumatic injuries. I did see pictures and I just … the pain she must be suffering, I can’t imagine.”

Violence is disturbingly common against pregnant mothers and their unborn babies, even without counting abortion. According to the March of Dimes: “The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that 1 in 6 abused women is first abused during pregnancy. More than 320,000 women are abused by their partners during pregnancy each year.”

Sometimes this abuse is connected to a woman protecting her unborn baby from abortion. Many mothers are pressured or forced by abusers to abort their unborn babies, while others are abused or killed for trying to protect their unborn children from violence.

Last year, a Memphis, Tennessee man was accused of murdering a pregnant woman and her unborn baby after she refused to have an abortion. And a Flint Township, Michigan man was convicted of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend in attempts to kill her unborn baby after she refused to get an abortion.
