The Democrat Party keeps losing members because of its radical abortion advocacy.

One of the latest to leave is John Williams, a pro-life township committeeman from New Jersey who has grown increasingly disgusted by the party’s pro-abortion actions, The New Jersey Globe reports.

Until now, Williams was the only Democrat member of the Buena Vista Township Committee. A former mayor of the township, he recently informed local Democrat Chairman Quentin McClellan that he plans to run for re-election as a Republican, according to the report.

Williams’ belief that unborn babies deserve a right to life was central to his decision to switch. He criticized Gov. Phil Murphy, a pro-abortion Democrat, for signing legislation earlier this month to keep abortions up to birth legal in the state even if Roe v. Wade is overturned, the report states. New Jersey already has the highest abortion rate in the country.

“I have thought long and hard about this decision, and I am not happy that the governor expanded abortion legislation,” Williams said. “I am pro-life, and I am doing this to have a better shot to stay on council and for religious reasons.”

Williams is part of a growing exodus as the Democrat Party abandons voters on the issue to meet the demands of the powerful abortion lobby. Party leaders now support late-term abortions without limits and taxpayer-funded abortions, both of which a strong majority of Americans oppose.

For siding with unborn babies and voters, Williams is being attacked as “a charlatan and a coward.”

According to the Globe, those were the words Atlantic County Democratic Chairman Michael Suleiman used to describe Williams in response to his party switch.

“It amazes me that John would actually put in writing that he’s switching parties just so he can stay in elected office,” Suleiman said. “If a jury ever found John Williams guilty of being a smart person, they’d be convicting an innocent man.”

But it’s nasty comments like these that are damaging the party, one high-ranking Democrat politician recently told Politico.

The U.S. House lawmaker, a pro-abortion Democrat who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the party is losing voters in swing districts because it is “bashing” pro-lifers. Increasingly, the message from Democrat party leaders has been that pro-lifers are not welcome in the party anymore.

So, many are leaving. Others who have left to become independents or Republicans include Texas state Rep. Ryan GuillenNew Jersey Congressman Jeff Van DrewWest Virginia House Del. Mick BatesNorth Las Vegas, Nevada Mayor John LeeQuincy, Massachusetts Mayor Thomas P. Kocha Louisiana state representative and a Philadelphia political activist.

Polls consistently show that the party’s abortion stance is extreme and out of touch with most Americans. The Democratic Party platform supports abortions without restriction and demands that taxpayers be forced to pay for them.

Very few Americans share that view. A 2021 Marist poll found 58 percent of Americans oppose using tax dollars to fund abortions in the U.S. Additionally, 77 percent oppose using tax dollars to fund abortions in other countries. A 2016 Harvard/Politico poll also found that most voters, including a strong majority of low-income voters, oppose taxpayer-funded abortions.

Recent polls also show strong public support for greater legal protections for unborn babies, such as heartbeat laws and bans on abortion after the first trimester.
